This is a good series that became excellent with the book "Once A Hero" as it shifts from Heris Serrano to Lt JG Esmay Suiza, a quiet officer who is considered to have low initiative who ends up in command of a ship after a mutiny and fires the deciding shot in a battle. Is she lucky or a tactical genius? And if she is a genius, how did everyone miss her before?

The characters get stronger at this point and I think Elizabeth Moon really finds her stride with Once A Hero and subsequent books.

But good to read from the beginning so you know all the players and the early books are also a good read.

I would also recommend her Vatta's War series. Very good reading.

You know... I tried reading 'A Hymn Before Battle', which is one of the freebies in the Baen library, and really could not get into it. The main character was a walking cliche and even in the first few chapters there were some things that made me... a bit squicky. To the point where when I stumbled across this review later, I felt it ringing very true... http://hradzka.livejournal.com/194753.html

Is there another of his books that I should try before giving up on his body of work entirely?

I would recommend you read March Upcountry the first book in the Empire of Man series before you give up on him completely. It does start off with the main character being an annoying brat, but the story as he grows is great. You can read them free from the link I posted earlier in the thread. Live free or Die is another good one, but it isn't available for free yet.

I used to like John Ringo, but that was when he wrote SF rather than thinly-disguised ultra-right-wing political propaganda, which is what all his more recent books appear to be.

As for "Ghost", don't get me started on that. One of the most repulsive books I've ever read.

Agreed. Though I only started Ghost, and quickly decided that my time was better spent NOT reading it.

I don't know what it is about Ringo, but I've yet been able to finish a single book of his. A number are available on CDs at The Fifth Imperium.

Oh yes. This is a definite gem. I was riveted. One of those books where I was still reading at 2 am even though I had to work the next day because I couldn't put it down.

agreed. it's the only book that i ever came this close to throwing in the garbage. i bought it expecting a clancy-esque techno thriller but instead got a bdsm manual/porn novel. i wasn't offended by it, nor ringo's politics, i just felt like i was sold a bill of goods. nowhere in the description does it say anything about bondage or the like.

at least you stopped before the charming last 1/3 of the novel where the "hero" beats the hell out of and borderline rapes a russian teen then throws cash at her to cover the damages.

Honestly, she's really amazing. She is the kind of author who both has very strong, relatable characters and also actually takes the time to examine the vast sociological and cultural impact of the improvements and advancements that she applies to her world. When I discovered the first books via Baen sometime last year, it went from my never having known about it to being one of my top 5 series of all time.

Annoyingly, there's one book in the series (Cetaganda) that Baen don't publish. You can certainly read the series without it, but it is a shame.
