Good news for the online ebook market in Australia

I would expect that the Kobo ereader (Kobo Touch currently) will be sold online as well. Currently, there is no domestic online or bricks and mortar sales presence in Australia. Hopefully Kobo can negotiate bricks and mortar resellers as well.

Interesting. We might be able to get the Kobos here after all. Too late for me, i've ordered a Sony. I think it's a smart move, they're getting into the ebook market at a good time.

True, but one must try and have some optimism. Hopefully their affiliation with Kobo might avoid some of that.

Well everyone can thank me for this happening. If it wasn't for me having to buy numerous overpriced Pearson text books for Uni I doubt they'd have the cash

All seriousness it will be interesting to see what comes of it. Pearson are generally an educational publisher, and now moving into books of all genres....well as I said, interesting.

These booksellers have sat on their backside, not willing to invest into ebook online selling (at equitable and fair pricing, Dymocks anyone?), whilst Borders and A&R powered up with Kobo to provide an online service.

Now Borders and A&R are gone and the ebook side of their business purchased by Pearson (who no doubt see the potential), these other booksellers decide to winge about it and call in the ACCC?

How typical.

Sabredog - you are soooo right! Why are booksellers the only "protected" industry in Australia? There are deals out there to be struck with every educational institution in Australia, a wide open market, a fully literate population - and all they do is cry poor! If they got off their collective butts they could have an ereader in 90% of Australia's hands and have a thriving business.

Yep as stated in the second paragraph of the second linked article

Other way round. Penguin Group is a division of Pearson PLC.

Hmm! At the moment some Penguin ebooks aren't for sale in Australia - certainly none offered on their AU site and the UK site only sells to the UK. I searched a couple of their "Popular Penguin" titles but they weren't available here,only in p book. Perhaps I just picked the wrong ones but that is a bit worrying.

Sounds like a geographic restriction issue. From past experience, Penguin are one of the worst offenders for this anachronistic practice.

No, CazMar, that is right. At the moment Penguin Australia couldn't organise a shag in a brothel or a pissup in a brewery as far as this goes.
