In a hot place for a long time, the over heating is a legitimate concern in summer, and so far I have just been out by the pool for about four hours - it was under a towel while I took some swimming breaks. For a few hours it was fine, but then it only got up to 94 that day.

The glare isn't really worse than a magazine with slick paper - a little annoying but not undoable. I mostly read in the tub and bathroom lighting isn't a problem - in the pictures I was at a resturaunt with sunlight coming in the windows behind me.

I would say let it cool periodically if you are somewhere hot. Since it is in a waterproof dry bag, you could stick it in the ice chest for a few while on the beach. If you get a locking Coleman chest that would help with security for wallet etc as well.

Great way to stress your eReader... go from over 90º to less than 32º (I'm assuming F as I think the plastic would be getting a bit soft at 94ºC ), in one go, definitely qualifies as a less than optimal move...

I rather had in mind putting it in the plastic sandwitch tray at the top, rather than plunging it into the iceoutside the water temperatures are unlikely to be lower than 45 to 50 degrees f for a large chest you keep opening to get ice and drinks from.

Condensation inside the bag could happen as well but hey, I can just wipe it and the bag down and these things are down to around $120 now and I always want a new one every few years. I wouldn't abuse mine just to abuse it, but I am not going to short myself on fun stuff.

Wouldn't want to do that freezer malarky myself, having seen the amount of condensation you get in a camera lens from simply coming indoors on a cold day.

The moisture could cause all sorts of problems over time, from electrical shorts to mould inside the device.

I've taken my reader on 2-3 vacations so far; I leave it in my bag by the pool, under the towel and have had no problems. Also no problems with glare, since I only sit in the sun for 20 min or so, and notice no problem taking it inside. I mostly swim within site of my chair anyway. If I take a walk on the beach my husband usually hangs out in the chair and plays guard duty. I haven't read a paperbook since I got my first reader 2+ years ago. The reader is also great for the plane ride (after take off and landing, during which they make you turn it off).

When you're in Cancun look for one of the tours that takes you to Chichen Itza, Ek Balam (fantastic new ruin found in 1996), with a swim in an underground cenote (near Chichen Itza). It's a long day but great to see all of them. If you have another free day I recommend Xplor, which is a new park opened near Xcaret with a zip line, underground cave swim, etc. It's new and basically undiscovered and uncrowded. Xcaret is an ecopark and while fun to see, is getting pretty crowded. Akumal is great for snorkeling. Some people like Xel-ha for snorkeling but I find it very crowded with little to see for the cost. We've been to the Playa del Carmen/Cancun area 10-12 times and really enjoy Mexico.

Best of luck with your medical services while there; hope it works out successfully for you!

I wouldn't consider not taking my e-ink reader to the pool/beach at Cancun. I think it's one of the primary advantages of them. I tend to chat with people around me and they keep an eye on it if I have to leave it unattended for a couple minutes. If I play water volleyball or something I take it with me and leave it on a table where I can keep an eye on it. I'm willing to risk the $150 replacement cost for the benefits. I've been doing it for 4 years without a problem.

I have an Aquapac that I use when I'm in the water and it works great. Water loungers, pool floats, swim up bar or hot tubs. If you get a rain shower you can keep reading while people with paper books scramble for cover. I'm not interested in the new touch screen models because I don't think they'd work well in the Aquapac.

I used to take a paper book with me on the trip because I was worried I might break the ereader but now I just download 20 books on my iphone as a backup. I've been fortunate though and never broke an e-ink screen.

Ipad Owner -- but I think I'd be the same with with a Kindle. I take a paperback book as it's not like I've forgotten how to read a real book. PBK's have their own advantages. Don't care if they get wet or stolen. Also, it's nice to read one every now and then to remind myself why I love to read ebooks so much more.

Don't you also need a print book for takeoff and landing?

I use an ipad as an e-reader, and I take it with me everywhere, especially on vacations. It's especially boring traveling in boats or planes, so I definitely need my iPad as an entertainment device. Most recently, I took my iPad with me to Indonesia, and I kept it in my bag at all times, unless, of course, I wanted to read. And I carried my bag with me everywhere I go, so it was never out of my sight.

I'm the kind of person who carries my bag with me everywhere, even when ordering food with friends, so bringing the iPad along and keeping it was pretty natural for me.

Well, I'm having some "issues" when taking the Kindle with me ... past weekend she said: can you please leave that at home next time?
