It depends on what generation you are talking about, from what I understand over the last decade, more kids are reading than in the previous decade.

It would be pretty easy to estimate if you looked at sales of kids and teen books per head of population at different times.

Well as for me, I've never seen one (or maybe just didn't noticed) until 2 years ago in Madrid metro when I went to SIMO. There I was when I noticed some lady looking into a gadget, I wondered what was that, thought it was some kind of agenda but later she turned her back to me and I could see the screen and I was astounded, she was reading some book in it. I kept staring at her for the rest of the trip when my school mates had to literally pull me out of the metro because I didn't noticed we had arrived at our stop. From there on I've always wanted to have one e-reader and seems like I finally got the chance

But until this year there was the problem of not having money to buy one, and they were expensive until the past year. But I think I really decided that I was going to buy one when I saw the front page of Amazon, and I "wasted" 2 months researching and trying to decide which e-reader would I buy, but I went for the Kindle.

Before that I've always wondered, man I wish there was some device where I could read books, never considered phones an option (too small).

Here in Portugal we officially only have Cool-ERs and Cybooks on stores and even so, they are hard to find, it's a new thing here and online stores only got a category for them like this year or so.

I find a hassle to read paper books, sometimes too heavy (fantasy and SciFi are evil ) to hold or carry. The loss of space in a bag. They are damn expensive, seems my country charges a lot for translations and just couldn't find that many originals. You can have a book you love ruined, either by a person, mouse, humidity, etc. If that book gets ruined or you lose it maybe you can't just have another because they don't sell it anymore. Well this is mostly the reasons I haven't read so much up 'till now.

BTW if someone told me before I've seen with my own eyes, that there was a screen that was paper like and without light, I would say they were out of their mind or something like that. Electronic paper technology is really impressive.

(Sorry for the long story )

On a side note.

I think the problem with e-readers is that most people don't even know that they exist. Amazon is the only one that's really showing the world what they are (I don't know about Nook because I'm not from US).

The more people that know about them of even use it and pass it unto other people, the more and more we'll start to see them in public areas. Or maybe they will prefer to use them at home but it's still an advancement.

Everywhere that I go I keep seeing a guy walking around with an electronic book... in the window reflections. They must be everywhere.

You think that's bad, try walking into the mirrored jewelry department at Bloomingdales. Sometimes you'll see multiple rows of thirty identical users. It's like The Matrix, only with Kindles.

well, yeah, but it's mainly comics, games and Harry Potter...

well, hopefully this introduction will lead some of them to really enjoy reading higher literature such as Calvin&Hobbes, Metal Gear Solid and The Lord of the Rings.

Well I think every kind of reading is well worth it, I actually learned most of my English playing Final Fantasy or for those you don't know the series they're Console RPG's (Role-Playing Games), so I guess it helped. As for Harry Potter I do think they're great books.

Hum I couldn't understand in what part Metal Gear Solid is an "higher literature" but well I didn't read anything about the Metal Gear world (I'm guessing it's fan fiction?), I only know the game, just thought it was funny and everyone has their preferences ^^

Well I'm not picking on you, just expressing my opinion

I actually once tried to learn Japanese to play Final Fantasy back when it was hot (PS1). I couldn't get past Mount Kanji, though... I indeed learned a lot of english from games back when internet was nowhere.

MGS is great.

exactly!

I'd never known about ereader, until 1 week before I bought my kindle. Really. If you talk about ereader here (in developing countries) the first question you get is "What is ereader?"

I'm 19. I don't read comics (except Lucky Luke) or games. Honestly I never read HP.

But I haven't read C&H or MGS or Lord of the Ring either so which category are you gonna put me in??

I'm still trying to learn Japanese, but It's a difficult language to learn, but I just love everything from Japan. Someday I'll get there, just have to work a little harder

Advertising is a powerful thing. I remarked to my father that I suspected (to my dismay) that "Kindle" was going to become synonymous with eReader in the way that Xerox has become synonymous with copy machine. ("Can you Xerox this for me?" "No, but I can make a copy on our HP copier.")

My father responded that Amazon should have patented their device.

My reaction: What should they have patented? Other people had ereaders before Amazon, and even the eInk technology that made the Kindle "revolutionary" was around and used before Amazon. Amazon didn't invent anything new with the Kindle. They just advertised the hell out of it.

So, yeah, I think you're exactly right.

What about middle/high school girls? Include them, and one might think it's all Twilight and Crank.

True, indeed. Students are often surprised when I have no objection to graphic novels. I only ask that they mix in traditional chapter books. (I have a similar request for students who prefer non-narrative nonfiction. I want them to learn what it feels like to become engrossed with a story; I want them to experience the "reading zone".)
