The great thing is, they're still making pbooks so if either are issues, just buy the pbook. No one is forced to buy an ebook yet and hopefully no one will ever be forced to.

Serious take on this--

"Impress people" is not a problem for most of us, but "shelf of books to show off to friends so they can borrow one" is nice. Even "shelf to show off to family members" is useful, and very difficult with ebooks.

Nothing to bring to author signings is a problem. And I've seen workarounds with promo postcards and such, but it fails to be attached to the book; don't get to open up the book and get the warm fuzzy reminder, "Oh yeah; I met this guy." Memorabilia on a shelf is not the same.

I expect that, in a few more years, note-taking in ebooks will be advanced/common enough that authors will be able to sign ebooks with a stylus.

Some people might want embedded videos of authors saying "thanks for reading" or some such thing, personalized and purchaseable from within the book. Probably very few people would want that though, I would like my ebooks to have as little physical presence as possible, in fact I would like the text of my ebooks to float in the air a few inches away from my face.

Ditto. Either of these is not a problem for me either. In fact, it saves me from buying a bookshelf and space in a room where bookshelf goes.

Since there is no legal secondary market for ebooks, I don't see the value in having an author signe an ebook. If I want an author-signed book, I buy the pbook version and have the author sign it.

As for having shelves of pbooks to impress others, that just doesn't fit my mode. I do have a large pbook library to which I keep adding, but it is for me and my family. I rarely bring others into the library.

How about a screensaver that can automatically extract the cover from all ebook files in specified directories, and display them in a virtual bookshelf, with an option to automatically rotate the books displayed if there are too many books to fit on the screen.

Personally I think I am better off without these relics of the past, the future has no place for such people that cling to the past. I have cut ties with the past and continue to do so.

Oooh, I actually really like that idea. I would totally buy a Calibre screensaver!

I'd especially like an option that cycled through book covers or had them flying onto the screen.

Oooh!! Remember the flying toasters! My god, someone program this now, please!

A better analogy would be "don't own a film camera and never print out photos."

When I was in college in the early 1990s I used to lust over film SLRs, particularly wanting something from the Cannon Eos line, but couldn't afford the several hundred dollars for the cheapest ones. A couple of years back, I thought about buying one on Ebay now that the same models I couldn't afford around 20 years ago now can be bought for 20 or 30 bucks. I decided that it wouldn't be worth even that much to me because I have absolutely no nostalgia to ever have to deal with the hassles of photographic film ever again.

I have found that when selling used dtbs, a signed copy can be worth less than an unsigned one.

Depends on the signing, the author and whether flatsigned or inscribed... oh yes, it also helps if the signature is from the author of the book...

I think odiakkoh was referring to the act of taking a photograph being a way of creating a keepsake of the past, regardless of the medium.

I still have my Pentax film SLR. It was the camera I learned with, so I won't part with it. I also still have my trio of Argus Bricks, and once in a while I run a roll through them, but rarely, and even then I just have the negs developed and scan them. My Oly DSLR has paid for itself twice over in terms of time and money I'm not spending fussing with film.

I really like the OP's attempt to think outside the box, while it's not nescessarily a need of mine, it's great to look into how you can add value to ebooks
