A Physical Presence for Ebooks

Two big problems with ebooks:

1. You can't have a shelf full of books to impress people.

2. There's nothing for an author to sign.

Here's my solution:

Every ebook should come with a template you can print out and fold into something to show you own the book.

These need not be booklike! They could be any sort of origami. They might sit on a shelf or hang by a piece of string. Maybe you make a paper hat that shows you're reading, say, "The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat." (Maybe it says on it, "This is not my wife...or is it?")

You can display these things (NEED A NAME!) or have them signed by the author, or both!

We have only begun to explore the possibilities!

!
I guess that some people might have problems with those issues, but I have heard of authors doing electronic signing of their ebooks. Don't remember the details but I've heard it's been done.

For me, both aren't problems as I have no interest in either. I don't have books to impress, and I've never seen any value in anyone's signature.

And I sure don't need any more 'knicknacks' to store. I'm trying to get rid of the ones I've got!

But then people will start pirating those templates and fold shelves full of book-origami that they don't own! And those disgusting thieves will be literally stealing food from the mouths of book-origami designers!

Are they really big problems? I guess personally I have no need of either.

Do really see the need for this personally. Surely if not having books on shelves bothers someone they will either buy pbooks or print the covers off themselves.

I'm going to get a gold marker pen so I can sign women's boobs like I saw Bryan Talbot do once. If they try to get me arrested I'll just say I'm a famous ebook writer.

I am grateful for the #1 because I don't know where to put all of my books!
As for the #2, the author can always sign it with a "new note" feature.

Well we've gone from a satirical look at the downside of ebooks to boob signing. I think this thread has played out.

I couldn't care less about either one of those supposed problems.

Where are the people who are impressed by shelves full of books? Can they please come to my house and be impressed? I have 5 huge bookshelves bulging with books and boxes hidden away in storage with the ones that don't fit in the shelves. And I have donated boxes of books to the local nursing home every year for the past 20 years.
The absence of a physical book is not a big problem - for me that is the main advantage of ebooks.

I totally missed the collecting autographs craze that my friends went through as children. I've never understood what that's all about? If I meet an author I admire and manage to have a discussion with them I can certainly remember that without a scribble in a book.
Or is the signature supposed to impress someone too?

Please tell me this thread was supposed to be a joke?

It's a good thing he has a short name. Imagine what would happen if his parents named him Rodolfo Alfonso Raffaello Piero Filiberto Guglielmi di Valentina d’Antoguella.
