We use a brand of litter that touts itself as 'scent controlling.' It seems to work. My wife has a nose like a bloodhound (but it looks cute on her) and is usually the first to complain about odors, but she doesn't seem to find the little box objectionable... usually.

I have litterboxes in the kitchen and my bedroom. they seem to feel they need to poo with an audience. the kitchen box is under the table pretty much at my feet. I feel so loved

this was Strider who isn't normally so toxic. Arwen is stabilized sort of... she gets the squirts every 5 to 7 days. when she starts I need to change her kibble again. counter-intuitive, but proven by time

I use the wood pellets that are intended for burning in pellet stoves. not only do I get a nice wood scent all of the time, they swell up the pee hits them and eventually break down into a sawdust sort of consistency. since I have been using them I have NEVER had pee smell, just the occasional over the top eye searing poo scent. these are really easy to scoop with as well

mmm - we use pine wood pellets sold by the supermarket , they break down gradually depending on volume of liquid (obviously) but my lady suffers from raw nasal passages when the chlorine in the wee pervades the air - Is there anything to neutralise that I wonder. The cats unanimously refuse to use anything other than wood pellets.....beside the resulting sawdust does not get dragged around the house.....

all but two of our trays are in the bathroom ! 2 in the bath itself .... seems they trained us that way ....

I'm having a small French exam next Tuesday - midterm exam actually, and it's scary. Why do French has so many weird verbs? I can't remember the way they put it.

In English:
I/we/you/they go.
he/she/it goes.

In French:
je vais.
tu vas.
il/elle va.
nous allons.
vous allez.
ils/elles vont.

why so complicated >"<

I'd be tempted to try some charcoal odor absorbers around the litter box area. Or something like what is stuck on the walls and used in public restrooms for odor control. Drawing a blank on exact names, but you might want to google for restroom supply companies.

Nothing I've found yet that you're supposed to put in the litter box has made a real difference in odor control in the air.

From your discussion about cats, their confusing behaviors, how to take care of them and many many miscellaneous things that only pop up when you have a cat for real, I made the decision not to have any pet at all cost.

We use the scent controlling type of litter, which works good except when Nikita drops a "bomb". She usually does this once a week, right before I intend to clean the upstairs litter box, which seems to be her private poop box since Lexie always uses the litter box downstairs. Luckily she usually warns us because she runs down the stairs really fast (fleeing for the smell she produced), we know we shouldn't go upstairs for a while.

Its worth it. Even if we whine about the smells and the occasional oddities of our pets, its just another extension of our affection for them. Our animals are an extension of our families, and ourselves. Pets learn their personalities from their caretakers, after all. I'd hate to think just because we were blathering on about little things that we'd turned someone away from the thought of adopting one of their own.

What AStrangerHere said. And besides -- it's cheaper than kids and every bit as much company! Kitties don't have elaborate weddings or a need to go to college.

(apologies to those who have BOTH pets and kids!)

this is what I use with the pellets. maybe it is a combination of the two things. what wee doesn't get absorbed by the wood pellets trickles through to the underneath tray and soaks into the pee pad. I have never smelled any urine since I have been using it. it is not because my nose is dead either because I go on home tours weekly and can sure tell when there is a pee problem in a house
