I did not read anything when I bought the Cybook that prevent me from putting the files on a web site. I meant the files that are in the system directory. If I have missed something please point that out.

Back home I've tried flashing again with the Kernel thing but impossible... Perhaps some systme files are needed for flashing??
I'm now looking for the files themselves to manually drag them in the now empty

system folder....

I asked permission of bookeen to help people out with reflashing. They said i could help as long as the information exchanged stays confidential. So i assume they will allow you to do that aswell.

The first thing that comes to mind as a possible bar is that the code will be copyrighted, and they may have (probably have) reserved rights to distribute it.

I am really curious if you can copyright binary code. But even iif it is copyrighted it can only be used by people having a Cybook so I do not really see how it could be a problem. People are sending the files wo whoever asks withou checking that they own a Cybook.

But I think it is a problem with all messages here about needing system files and the replies and the replies to the replies. And every such message is bad publicity for Bookeen because they are here because they do not answer their email in a timely manner.

Sure you can! It's still just characters, even if they're all 1 and 0.

Copyrighting software is an extremely common practice, especially for commercial enterprises.

Conceptually, I'd agree with you, but the operative bit (you should pardon the pun) here is whether or not any lawyer types would take exception to it. You or I or any other individual passing the code along is unlikely to draw their ire, or even their notice, but the forum may be a different matter. They do read us, and have even posted here occasionally.

Well, you cannot copyright a random sequence of numbers. There must be some creativity and originality involved. And a program you cannot use or read or an encrypted file cannot be copyrighted. The decrypted file can be copyrighted.

Yes, just send me the flv through my personal email address, dabenner - ATiver - comcast - DOTiver - net. Yep, I munged it a bit to throw off the email miners.

The big issue, I believe, is the custom mods done to the OS by Bookeen - as well as the fact that the ebook reader app (Boo Reader) is all proprietary. I don't mind Bookeen keeping the apps proprietary, but I'd really like to see the source for the underlying OS.

We are talking about the sytem files. I though the OS and programs was in the firmware. On the other hand icudt36l.dat is rather large so it can contain things. As had been pointed out before they are probably required to distribute the sorce for the GPL part of the OS and for the modification they have done that became GPL:ed.

If it were random then it wouldn't be code.

If you cannot decode them they do not satisfy the creativity or originality requirement. Even if you can decode them it is the decoded form that is problematic and not the meaningless sequence of characters.
