I think that there may have been people with wheat/gluten allergies that have had some arthritis like symptoms. I don't think that it led to arthritis though.

Do you have those symptoms after eating a lot of non-gluten type starches? Things like potatoes, rice, etc?

It's been so long since I was really into the fine details of food. For a while I was a vegetarian. I've seen some things work for some people. But I also heard/read a lot of real horse poo.

I remember some guy saying he had "purified" his body so much that all he needed was clean air. Needless to say someone took a picture of him in a restaurant having a nice large meal, with meat.

Someone once told me that Dunkin Donuts was so bad for you that it took at least three days to leave your body. I guess that the other food just jumped through those donut holes.

My key to good health, aside from eating whole grain products and lots of vegetables along with my meats, is to enjoy life as best as I can. I've seen over and over how stress/unhappiness/despair can lead anyone, regardless of diet, to ill health and an early grave.

I had a neighbor die from a bleeding ulcer in his early forties.

My prescription is a sure fire winner/no-looser plan. Live well and try to be happy. Even if you die young, you lived well and were happy. I look on food as a hobby, enjoy it. It doesn't rule me.

Or worry a lot about what you eat and be miserable.

Something that most of you REALLY do not want to read.
Spoiler:

When I was young I read all of the WWII prison of war stories that I could find. In one of those books was a story about prisoners in a Japanese Prisoner of War camp. Some of the American prisoners were picking rice from diarrhea to help them survive.

Anyone want to complain about food now?

Yes. I've grown cheese in the fridge.

Mostly it's green and furry when grown at home, and it doesn't taste quite right either. Must be something that I'm doing wrong, although I don't know just what.

Corn
Green lima beans
yellow squash
potatoes
tomatoes (yes I know it's really a fruit. I don't care, if I put salt on it it's a veggie!)
English peas
Lettuce (of various kinds)
spinach
radishes
cucumber
raw cabbage
carrots
onions
garlic
broccoli

There's a lot of other stuff I will eat, but they didn't come to mind as a favorite. The one veggie I will not eat: Bell pepper.

My SO's sister just realised that she has gluten allergies. She's 38 and have been dealing w/ intestinal trouble and full body rashes all of her life. I can't recall what made her realise what it was, but I saw her last August when the rashes all over her arms were healing. They looked pretty bad in the "been healing for weeks" stage. I can only imagine what they looked like before.

As for me, I don't have a gluten allergy. Whole wheat may be one of the least of the carb offenders. It seems, the simpler the carb, the more likely I am to have my knuckles start to ache. Too much of anything white seems to be the culpri. I don't think the carbs gave me arthritis, but does cause, what would be a dormant auto immune disease, to flair up. My arthritis is definitely hereditary, and I am REALLY grateful that is has not really affected me up to this point. I have an aunt whose arthritis is in every joint of her body. She's in a wheelchair, can't feed herself, can't use the remote on the TV, and because of the drugs that she is taking for her pain, has incredible short term memory loss. She'll ask you a question, you'll answer it and she'll ask you again as if it's the first time she said it. She can do this 10 times in a row before she wants to say something else. When she was still living at home, I remembered seeing a prescription for Dilaudid sitting on her shelf. I was like...what the...??

I'm with you on that one. It's all about balance. I eat well because good food tastes better than junk food, but if I want junk food, I won't beat myself up about it. It's all about moderation. The only time I really watch what I eat is when I'm on vacation. Too many times I've given myself carte blanche to eat crappy on vacation, only to feel crappy my whole vacation. Now I eat well when when I'm on vacation so I can savor every relaxing moment, instead of worrying about when I can get back to the hotel and lay down.

Anyone else sprinkle black pepper on cantaloupe?

I like just about any vegetable except beets and its been so long since I've eaten one of those that I don't really remember what they taste like. I might like them now if I tried them again.

But my favorites are
green beans
succotash
brussels sprouts
tomatoes
onions
sweet potatoes
carrots
bell peppers
squash
asparagus
turnip greens
collards
turnips
cabbage
fried okra
kale

Okra!

I've been living up north so long that I forgot that it even exists! Up here it costs about as much as a small steak. When I do buy enough for myself (wife thinks that it's (small) ok) it usually totals about $10 or more.

I've made entire meals out of okra. Living in Florida it even grew along the road like a weed.

Yuck!!! Oh, wait. I thought you said Oprah. Never mind.

I grew up on black-eyed peas "flavored" with okra. If you boil it long enough, the okra becomes a slimy, tasteless string thing that you have to try to eat around. The other option was to fry it in which case it tastes just like everything else you fry. Recently, I had a Mediterranean dish with okra, tomatoes, and a little lamb for added flavor. The okra was fairly firm, not slimy at all, and tasted great. Who knew?

But ranting about snow is such a pleasure.

Besides, I've got a couple of nice pictures out of it anyway. Then I'll have something to look at when it gets really hot.

Stewed okra and tomatoes is very tasty. I don't eat it fried very much, but I like it in its slimy form!

I don't eat it by itself except fried, but I like it in vegetable soup and, of course, gumbo where it acts as a thickener in lieu of filé.
