The Mt. Aso volcano is quite active! And there are several other volcanoes on Kyusho too, often releasing puffs of steam now and then. Of course, with the luck I have with natural disasters, I think I may just line my riding clothes with asbestos and Nomex! It's all that volcanic action that keeps Kyushu's hot springs bubbling. Some towns have vendors selling boiled eggs and corn on the cob that they boil for customers in water coming out of the ground. In the village of Beppu, most of the homes are heated in winter by the natural hot water that they divert through pipes in their floors! We plan to stay in a different onsen each night, but the ones I really like have outdoor natural rock pools, so you can lie back, watch the stars, and boil yourself.

That was the one I had too, I was very satisfied with it so I hope this newer model won't disappoint. I need to buy a new bicycle mount since the old one isn't compatible.

Just remember "Pic's or it didn't happen!"

Keep it on 2 wheels, squishy side up. Enjoy the ride, the destination is only incidental, the ride is the reason for the trip.

Cheers

We haven't planned any destinations other than one night with the in-laws. All I've looked at are maps to find the best motorcycle roads. Japan puts out really wonderful Motorcycle Touring books, showing all the very best roads to ride, what kind of surfaces they have, etc. Every morning we'll just look to see where we are, look at the map books to find the best ride for the day, and head off in that direction. Late in the afternoon, we'll look in the book to find the nicest onsen nearby to stay in.

This is perhaps the most rural of Japan's islands, extremely mountainous, and hosts Japan's most active volcano, Mt Aso at 1,591 metres (5,220 ft) There are many other signs of tectonic activity, including numerous areas of hot springs, which means hot springs resort spas, which we'll use as our evening's lodgings.

Are you ready for this... NO BUGS.
I don't understand it, but I can use the same face shield on my helmet for an entire summer and never once have to clean the outside of it. When riding in the US, I'd carry a small bottle of Windex and a roll of paper towels because I'd have to clean my shield EVERY NIGHT! Sometimes twice a day.

I don't understand how flowers get pollinated in Japan. All I ever see, insect-wise, are dragon flies and some of those huge dirigible-size bumble bees. On the other hand, let me say right here that I'm not complaining! I can remember riding along peacefully at 60mph along an Alabama road, and have a kamikaze June Bug smash into my face shield and almost knock my head off my shoulders!

Stitchawl
so shall we start taking bets on that volcano now?

I damn near had to carry a metal toothpick riding in Germany! there were some BIG bugs there!

I'd still wear the frames, so as not to get a ticket for not wearing glasses (people always assume when the see you wearing the frames that the lenses are in them), and I had to limit my speed, because high winds aren't pleasant on naked eyeballs, even without bugs and debris. In those days, I rode year around, even in rain and at least once in snow.
try riding on the front range of Colorado! winds, (some of them VERY high) are a constant and there is always fine sand in the air. every vehicle has finely pitted paint and windows. that stuff HURTS on your face!

Not owning a car, I use my bike year around for all my transportation need. Getting caught in the snow is just one of God's little jokes played on bikers. No big deal as long as you don't fall down. But I need something warmer than a half helmet. And I want the protection of a full face helmet as well. I fall down too often to trust even an open-face helmet!

Erm.... actually it was called "Cat Crap" and it 'was' a great product. Perhaps the best of the bunch before this new stuff came out. And fortunate for us that it did come out as the makers of "Cat Crap" stopped production. There was a guy down in western North Carolina, in one of the Indian Reservation tourist venues, who sold small plastic pill bottles of No Fog stuff that worked as well as "Cat Crap" and only cost about $4 for two bottles. Almost a lifetime supply. I bought two bottles back in '95 and although using it almost daily ever since, still have 1½ bottles left! But the new "Clarity DeFog" is easier to use, never any streaking, and lasts almost two days of heavy need.

Right now, I am massaging my aches and counting my scratches. We are having our bathroom remodelled. Tim wants to pay a contractor to do every little thing. The labor to remove the old vanity and install the new pedestal sink was going to be $200 more than the price of the sink.

So I got up early and unplumbed the sink and ripped apart the vanity cabinet because it was too heavy for me to move in one piece. Then I gutted the walls. So now I just have to pay someone to install the new sink and hang the sheet rock.

If Tim keeps cheesing me off like this, I'll show him again! ... I'll hang my own d@mned wall board!

I may be blind, but i'm hot h3ll with a pry bar!
