Yes, it does, and thanks for pointing it out. It took a little fiddling to get it set up properly, and there are a few tweaks I'd like to see that I may drop a note to the author about. IIRC, GMail Notifier was originally a fork of GMail Manager.
(Firefox 4.2a1Pre complains about it when it loads, but it seems to work there once up.) ______ Dennis |

Yes, it's quick. Major goals for 4.0 were performance improvements and reducing the amount of chrome used by the browser. Performance improvements included using native hardware acceleration where possible, switching from synchronous to asynchronous programming, so the whole browser doesn't hang waiting for something to complete, and moving to Jaegermonkey, a new and faster JavaScript engine. Since a good deal of FF itself is actually implemented in JavaScript, this has overall benefits. Hardware acceleration does involve the occasional funny. On Windows, FF 4 uses DirectX, and is uncovering problems in DX implementation. I was bemused to watch FF attempting to enumerate every font on my system, and I have about 1,200 installed. Why was it doing so? A DirectX call triggered it, and an MS library was the culprit. To avoid clobbering startup performance, FF's workaround was to delay the operation till later in the FF load process, but a real fix will require MS to fix their code. (IE9 is also bitten by this, so MS might have an incentive to actually make the fix...) Chrome reduction includes things like the placement of the Stop/Reload button, Tabs on Top, and rearchitecting toolbars. FF4 looks like this, here: (Menu Bar, Bookmarks Bar, and Addons Bar are all hidden until moused over.) ![]() ______ Dennis |

Thanks Dennis. I don't see that I can move the 'refresh' button, but good to know that I can add a button for Xmarks if I want.

Right-click the Menu Bar, and choose Customize. You'll see something like this: ![]() Note that the Reload and Stop buttons appear between the Nav box and the Search box. Drag and drop them where you like. The same is true for any other button there. If you want the Stop/Reload functionality combined, and which is shown depends on what's happening, there's a CSS hack I used under FF3 that I believe still works. (I don't have a problem with the current layout, and haven't checked.) ______ Dennis Last edited by DMcCunney; 03-24-2011 at 04:52 PM. Reason: s/Drop/Stop/ |

Thanks, that was totally confusing, but yeah I did it. Once you open the "customize" then you can drag and drop the menu buttons/bars around.

The goal is to reduce the differences between locations and be able to put anything anywhere, so a toolbar is a toolbar is a toolbar. It's not quite there yet, but it's a lot closer than it was. Note that the Status bar is now the Addons bar, and things like status messages (such as the full URL you are currently pointing at) now appear in a separate popup window at bottom left. ______ Dennis |

That's what I figured.
Once of the reasons I run Firefox is the underlying architecture. As well as HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, the underlying Gecko rendering engine understands and renders XUL, an XML language for creating user interfaces. The actual look and feel of Firefox is created by XUL, CSS, and widgets, with JavaScript performing the action when you select a menu item or click a button. This just invites people to mess with it, as you can create themes to modify how it looks, and extensions to change how it acts, and literally thousands of such things exist. I've never been terribly concerned with themes, but have dove head first into the addons pool, and an assortment are part of my standard kit. The fact that you can do stuff like that is the principal reason I run FF in the first place. The fact that it's more secure than IE runs a distant second, as pretty much any other browser is more secure than IE. ![]() I have IE8, Google Chrome 11, Opera 11, and Safari 5 here among other things, but FF is my "production" browser. At the moment, I have FF 4 and my standard profile on a ramdisk, and run things from there. Works a treat, and is quick. ______ Dennis |

Unboxing my new Garmin Gpsmap 62s. Since I sold my older model a couple of months ago it was time to make the upgrade. The antenna/reception should be about the same quality as the old one but its got an upgraded 3-axis compass and support for satellite imagery.
