In my case I was fortunate enough to be able to get a refund as the estore in questions CEO supported me. I very much doubt others were as lucky.

So that would be a question I would like an answer or opinion to as well.

Many of those who download a digital copy of a movie were never going to see/buy the movie in the first place. The entertainment industry always inflate their loss figures this way as it supports their point of view and justifies their anachronistic business/distribution model.

Oh please, the pathetic excuse of the criminal, "but I wouldn't have bought it anyway". That's a very old and tired story.

I think that it's a very bad thing. But it's not the publisher's fault - they have no choice in the matter. If you want to blame someone, blame the author for signing a geographically-restricted contract.

I communicated via email to a rather well known SF author about this issue and he knew nothing of geo restrictions. He was going to discuss the issue with his agent as he considered it to be extremely unfair.

It's also quite true, more often than not. Not every violated copyright is a lost sale. Heck, I'm going out on a limb here, most probably aren't.

He sounds to have been rather lax in his business affairs if he didn't understand the terms of the contracts that he was signing.

I'm sure that's true, but to my mind it's completely irrelevant. The important point is that the person is taking advantage of those honest people who DO buy books: those books would not exist for him to illegally download if it wasn't for the honest majority who buy them.

I will let him know that.

Shame the publishing companies still INCLUDE geographic restrictions within their contract documents which are still being offered to authors and their agents.

I don't agree there, I'm afraid. I think it's highly relevant if we want to come up with a way to allow authors to make a living off their writing. The solution is certainly not to moan and groan about every "lost sale" that really wasn't.

Sorry, but so is yours. Copyright violation for personal use last time I looked was a civil offence not criminal.

I would agree. One of the primary parts of a contract is distribution/publications rights.

Back to the thread topic.

I just noted that the next Lost Fleet ebook by Jack Campbell is available for pre-order on Amazon. Price difference between the last book and this one is US$5 ($7.99 to $12.99)

I must admit the price gave me pause and the unbidden thought "Get it elsewhere" flashed through my mind, but I ordered it duly.

The price hike though is pretty steep.

Actually they wouldn't exist for him to download if it wasn't for one person who either bought a retail ebook or made their own from a realbook putting it there. Whether anyone else (honest or not) bought it wouldn't really make any difference to that copy's existence.

So what? It does not invalidate the argument that it is reasonabe to pay more for faster access.
