That is true for most people I know also. The reason is that an hardcover takes to much place and do not fit into a shelf optimized for paperbacks. And some people would be willing to pay hardcover price to get early access to a paperback version of the book. But for a lot of people the fact that the paperback version is not available will lead to a lost sale since they will read the book in another way and later not buy the paperback version.

They're easy to find, too - and as for typo-filled scans - that can apply to retail eBooks as easily as to pirate ones.

And I've never found a retail ebook as typo-filled as a scanned one. That's one thing I am an expert on, as I've spent 5 years in the document scanning/ocring business. |

I don't know what retail ebooks you are reading but I have never read one that doesn't have at least 5 mistakes in it.

I either didn't state it well or I'm just wrong, don't know which.
I just meant that on normal torrent tracking sites (I use a meta meta tracker, torrentz.eu, searches most of the big ones like piratebay, bitmon, so on) you can only find torrents for big name authors. Then there are the IRC channels, which take forever to use, have poor selections in weird formats and often have scanned books. I think a lot of people would rather pay $5 for a book than bother with them. But maybe there are easier methods I don't know about. |

Or the schools copies become worn and need physical replacement. All pbooks do eventually show signs of wear after all.

I agree that cutting the prices is one of the way to curb piracy.
I love reading but the prices for the ebooks are just so crazy...imagine 7,000 words for USD3. What I can only do is save these ebooks up in my wishlist and pray for deep discounts ie Kobobooks or Fictionwise or other resellers/publishers to buy them. As for the books, I can only do is wait till a year period is over and hopefully cheaper versions would be out by then or try secondhand online bookstores ( trust on their description of their books ) |

People who do not rip/convert DVD will just end up not buying and going to the net too find a digital copy. So the MPAA is just going to cause an increase in piracy and a loss of profit. They have themselves to blame. If the digital copy didn't expire, then people would not be pissed and go off looking for an already made digital copy.

But with DVDs, I can go find the lowest price be it online or a local shop. With agency eBooks, I cannot do that. So my choice is to over pay, way and hope they go down to a price I will pay, not buy and do without of go troll the net and find it for free. So really, the agency 6 are driving people to go the troll the net route.

HarryT, what's your opinion of geo-restriction that now prevents people from accessing legally purchased eBooks that was bought 100% legally before geo-restriction and now cannot access those eBooks? Some people need this access because they need to update the DRM. And even if not, they still should have access to the eBooks since they were legally paid for before geo-restrictions.
