Really? I heard the exact opposite. Hilo really didnʻt get much at all. Kona got hit fairly hard (or so CNN keeps reporting, I loved the one about the extensive damage on "kona island"). There is quite a bit of damage, with many businesses gutted with water, and their belongings strewn all over the road. The road was closed for a while as they tried to clean up debris and such as well.

This is the reason I like to live in the middle somewhere-- out of the evacuation zone and not too close to any volcano, lest a new one erupt...

Iʻm concerned for stitchawl though-- has he contacted anyone yet? I have a friend in Japan who suffered some serious injury, but was luckily out of the tsunamiʻs path. The footage is breathtaking and horrible.
Good to hear from you Grace. The destruction there is horrible!

I was thinking, I'm missing the green. But, it's only the middle of March, the growing season must still start... Can you imagine this would have happened at the end of the growing season (September)? No grasses coming to cover the devastation with a green shroud and only dark, gray and brown days to look forward to?

Good to see your OK Grace; for the record what really went down over there? Not what CNN or Joe Moore reported. Over here on O`ahu, we had some roads closed during the actual tsunami watch as a precaution, and a little damage to some boats and at some of the marinas.

All State and County workers were off and all but one of the schools were closed, but it was a furlough day anyway. My trash didn't get picked up until Saturday.

KHVH reported that all Federal workers (me) were "encouraged to stay home", but I was almost at work when I heard that so I went ahead and went in anyway. Lucky for me, ‘cause it was a figment of someone’s imagination. We had one man who didn’t show up, and he got into a little trouble.

That area of the world is going through so much trauma and heartache, that for us who are not involved it's impossible to comprehend.

One significant fact that I have noticed amongst he population is; there is no looting, nor turning on each other in times of disaster.

Cheers

If you google the area and "tsunami," you see lots of video of the downtown drag under water, and what Bubba Gump restaurant in particular looked like. There's a lovely vid of a dumpster (huge orange dumpster) floating down the street, and a vid of a house floating away in Kealakekua Bay. I know it caused quite a bit of damage, but the damage was to a limited number of locations. It cracked me up that the stations were showing closures of schools, when all the DOE public schools were on furlough anyway!

They did keep one road closed for a good part of the day as they tried to clean up debris and such.

It has been an awful start to the year... First the Floods in Queensland, then the cyclone Yasi... Soon after that came the more destructive earthquake in Christchurch, and now just 2 months after our flood the devastating earthquake and tsunami in Japan..

I can't help to think what's next??

All my thoughts and prayers at the moment to the people of Japan, the ones who have family and friends there and to those deeply disturbed by the incident (such as children around the world)
