That's the true romantic artist, right there! a living fossil to behold!

I think you're missing the point. You're the one that raised the subject of free concerts with:

Quote:
Go ask a virtuoso pianist who's been training all day long ever since he was 5 to master his art if he's willing to give performances for free to a bunch of whining crackheads.
Which of course, is completely off topic. Nobody but you has suggested that loss of copyright of their recorded works means that musicians are expected to perform live concerts for free.

In case you haven't noticed already, the OP is proposing precisely getting away with the need to pay for a work of art, any such work, which I concluded would also mean music performance. Pay if will, not because an artist also needs to pay his bills...

No I didn't notice that, because it doesn't say anything of the sort. I just went back and reread the OP. It talks about copyright, and electronic media making copyright obsolete.

But I don't see anything about forcing musicians to play live performances for free. No matter how hard I read between the lines.

Recording a performance and then copying that recording will be permitted.

Beyond the idea that what you are actually doing is flipping a switch on your device and recording the perturbations of the air around you. What cannot be recorded is the functioning of the performers mind as signals are sent to the fingers, I mean we can record that, but we have trouble interpreting what those recordings mean, and yet we enjoy interpreting the performances nonetheless.

I was just reading this,

"For this is not the liberty which we can hope, that no grievance ever should arise in the Commonwealth—that let no man in this world expect; but when complaints are freely heard, deeply considered and speedily reformed, then is the utmost bound of civil liberty attained that wise men look for. " From here,

http://www.gutenberg.org/files/608/608-h/608-h.htm

And thought it sounded like this,

"New modes of being will arise spontaneously from this massive thought experiment, be discussed at length and abandoned just as quickly until one ideal is realized that will be the harbinger of the new day."

What do you think?

@spellbanisher, I'm curious as to where you think we should date the origins of copyright?

No... your interpretation isn't an interpretation, it's different and doesn't even approach meaning the same thing... one is an intelligent and thoughtful position hoping for a better world where reason will be allowed to work, the other is a woolly waffle of cuddly pink goo that wants a sole idea to rule the world... we've been there, tried it and got rid of it in many places...

Yes, I probably do need to add the caveat that all ideas are capable of being outmoded, even this one. Thanks!
