That's exactly the sort of thing I was thinking of. Not something you *plan* on doing, but something you always have as an option.

It'll make the Sony fans here (of which I am one!) cringe, but I'm starting to lean towards the Kindle 3. For the price it's looking hard to beat.

Yah, I hear you. The K3 is great value. The dearth of 650s doesn't help either.

What is 'darth'? Do you mean death? They are not dead. There is a shortage and that's all. The fact they were sold like crazy before Christmas is just showing how damn good they are!

I fail to see the good value for the money with the Kindle. The are e-ink readers. The aren't good looking, the functions are somewhat awkward to get to, three buttons to click to lookup a word in the dictionary ASFIK, no possibility to check out Library books without breaking or at least stretching the law.

For what a Kindle is able to do, a Kobo is far better value. Library access that will save you a fortune over time and cheaper, too.

If I were the one to decide now, I would either wait or search high and low to get a Sony, check into the Singapore Library with it 20000 up-to-date books and be happy as one can be, tapping my little touchscreen trying to find out what 'dearth' could mean...

dearth = shortage, lack of availability. So if the OP had been on the fence leaning towards a 650 and was not able to get one he/she may have had time to look at the Kindle and decide that it would work for him.

One of these days you are going to accept that the Sony is not the perfect e-reader for everyone. It is great that it works so well for you but the K3 works just as well for many folks. If the OP is happy with his K3 then good for him/her.

ETA: The exact definition according to Merriam Websters website.

Definition of DEARTH
1: scarcity that makes dear; specifically : famine
2: an inadequate supply : lack <a dearth of evidence>

See dearth defined for English-language learners »
Examples of DEARTH
<there was a dearth of usable firewood at the campsite>

<the dearth of salesclerks at the shoe store annoyed us>

It may also be a respite for booksellers, who have been grumbling for several years about sluggish sales and a dearth of dependable blockbuster fiction. —Julie Bosman, New York Times, 19 Oct. 2006

Earnhardt has recently hinted that a company-wide dearth of talent is the core reason his Chevy simply isn't as fast in 2005 as it's been in the past. —Lars Anderson, Sports Illustrated, 11 Apr. 2006

AirNet, which hauls bank checks and other time-critical freight, used to require that its pilots have at least 1,200 hours of flight experience. Then, faced with a dearth of experienced applicants, it dropped the requirement to 500 hours. Now, it has no minimum. —Scott McCartney, Wall Street Journal, 10 Aug. 2000

Origin of DEARTH

Middle English derthe, from Old English *dierth, from dēore dear
First Known Use: 13th century

Easy there everyone

I get that we're all passionate about our devices and I'm right there with you. We've also all got our likes and dislikes. I've also learned to accept that what works for one person may drive another person crazy.

Do I think the Sony devices are good? Absolutely. I really like how they've implemented the new touchscreens (tech bought from another company.) I do think it's easier and more intuitive to use a touchscreen for navigation of menus and selection of things on the screen. Double-tapping to look up a word is a perfect example of the strengths of those touchscreens.

That said I have used both the Sony devices (350 & 950) and the Kindle 3 so when I decided to "settle" for the Kindle 3 I'm aware of what I'm really choosing. For how I normally use an ebook device the Kindle will work just fine. Remember that I'm coming from a Sony 505 which is also button navigation, but slower than current generation devices from Sony and Amazon. I also like the better native font options on the Kindle. I know how to control fonts on the Sony's and I've been doing so for a couple years now with my 505, but I like that with no work on my part the Kindle already has more and better options.

In the end, the whole point for me is about reading novels. That's exclusively what I use an ebook device for at this stage of my life and for that my only real requirements are a good screen, quick page turns and comfortable to hold for long stretches. So for me Amazon vs. Sony mostly came down to price & availability.

This is somewhere we'll have to agree to disagree. While I own neither a Kobo nor a Kindle, I have seen and compared both devices and I don't see a greater value to the Kobo. It is cheaper, but it's not as good either - and I don't think the lower price makes up for the fact it doesn't serve its primary purpose as well.

I imagine the Kindle is easier to hold, being lighter. But the Sony build-quality is better. It's all six of one and half a dozen of the other.

There are a lot of hacks available for the Kindle too. To be expected with such a large user-base.

Speaking of font handling, I think the Opus kicks both their butts.

And what's a darth?

Darth is a popular brand of e-reader from the dark side. The text-to-speech sounds just like James Earl Jones!
