Upgrade from 505 to 650/950 Questions

I'm considering upgrading from a PRS-505 to a PRS-650 or PRS-950.

My ebooks are stored in the PRS-505 on an SD card and backed up on my computer. Some books are DRM from Sony, Fictionwise and the Public Library. Others are public domain from Gutenberg.

My questions:
1. Will both the PRS-650 and PRS-950 read my PRS-505 SD card?
2. If so, I assume DRM-ed books are linked to my specific PRS-505 and can't be read on a new PRS-650 or PRS-950, while the public domain books can be. Is that correct?

Thanks in advance.

1. Yes
2. No, books are linked to the user account, not a specific device. If you authorize your new reader for the same account, you will be able to read the books.

You are allowed to have 6 devices linked to a single account (unless they have increased the number) with the computer being one of the devices.

If any of your DRM'd books are LRX, you will need to redownload them as EPubs, I think.

Excellent point. LRF without DRM is fine but LRX with DRM is not with the new ereaders. You can download the EPUB versions of your previous Sony LRX purchases through your account page on the Sony bookstore.

For what it's worth the new models have so much memory in comparison to the 505 that I keep everything on the main memory now instead of on SD card like I did with my 505.

I've read several comments about placing all books in memory. That is probably the way to go, since on the PRS-505 using the SD card is noticeably slower than using memory.

I can add - personal experience only - my battery life on both the 600 and 650 was greatly diminished when I used a memory card.

At first, I thought it was just the 600. I ran the 650 with books in memory only for the first few weeks and battery life was like my 505 and I was so happy! Inserted a memory card full of books - eek, recharge every few days again!

I still use the card and just charge it more often. But one of these days, I'll probably try breaking up my books into a couple or three cards to see if there's any benefit to having fewer books at one time.

A big benefit to having all your books on the card is they are easily portable between Sony devices, not only the books themselves, but the date added, your bookmarks, latest read, etc.

I had to get my PRS-650 replaced via warranty due to a black pixel on the screen. I popped out the SD card from the old one and put it in the new one and had everything exactly the same. No waiting for calibre to transfer my 2500 books or the Sony to index them.

I had similar feelings when I switched to the 650.

I think a factor might be that I've not loaded many books to the 650 (and hence not been recharging it while it's hooked up to my pc), but I've now started shutting down the 650 (rather than putting it on standby) and the battery life seems a lot more like my 505 used to be.

I have almost all my books on the card, and use the audio on occasion, and I find the battery life excellent.
