I understand that this update is being pushed out now. It also appears that the update process is completely automatic and happens whether you want it to or not (if you have left your wireless on).
Since none of the updates really interest me, and I find the location numbers being constantly displayed useful, how can I prevent this update from happening? I'm fine leaving my wireless off for a while, but that is not a permanent solution. |

Sure enough, I looked at my Kindle last night and it is now at 3.1.
Oh well. The location thing isn't bothering me. In fact, as someone else mentioned, I wish they had moved the always-visible % number to the lower line to give one more line of reading space.* The other features in this update are meaningless to me, but they are so far not as intrusive or distracting as I thought they'd be, so I'll probably get over my annoyance. I just wish they had fixed the things that DO matter to me. ApK * I also hadn't noticed until reading side by side with our K2 a few days ago that the K3 doesn't keep an info bar visible on top like the K2 does...it makes the screen look considerably bigger. |

uhm...might be a silly question, but with the new page numbers feature, i don't suppose kindle lets you search for a certain page?

I might be wrong here, since I don't have my Kindle with me...but I just got this thing at Target about 6 weeks ago...and it already HAS version 3.TWO...a later version...
I hope I don't get 'downgraded' I don't think I WANT any of the changes, nor do I want my screensaver hack screwed up...I only turn on wireless when making a purchase, and I have not turned it on for at least a week.... |

Your kindle from target had 3.0.2.
This is now 3.1. In any case, not only wouldn't your Kindle be downgraded, but the Kindle CAN'T be downgraded even if you want to, at least not by the usual processes. As I hear it (from these forums) your ability to remove and add hacks will be broken for now, but if the hack is in place, it will stay in place and continue working. If you first enable the USB networking hack (and know what you are doing) I hear you can still manage the hacks after the upgrade. Last edited by ApK; 02-18-2011 at 10:45 AM. |

I'm thinking the same thing.
Has anyone besides ApK had 3.1 automatically pushed? My Kindle has 3.03, and Amazon is still referring to 3.1 as an "Early Preview Release" here: http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/custom...deId=200529700. Also, will Amazon push this via 3G? I don't have wireless access at home. |

I believe another person, Snakey, said his father's kindle was upgrade to 3.1. His/her father noticed because LOCATIONS had disappeared on the bottom status line. It now only shows when you press Menu.
So it seems it is being "shipping" by Amazon but there's no telling when someone will receive it. |

That's interesting. What is someone does not setup there wifi at "Starbucks" or other joints. So firmware upgrades are only via wifi???

Thanks, BakerBug and FF2! I'm feeling rather ambivalent about the new features of 3.1, so I'm not in a big hurry to get it.
I just turned on 3G and will keep the Kindle charged today, but it sounds like the update's not going to happen for me automatically since I don't have wireless. If that's the case, I'll download and install it myself eventually. I prefer to make sure that any bugs are worked out first, when possible. I'm just wondering why Amazon's still referring to it as an "early preview release" if they're pushing it now. Perhaps the description will change on their web page in the next few days. |
