Grimm, please be honest with yourself and recognize the pros and cons of each technology.
Do me a favor jocampo and stop trying to tell me what I should think. Your arrogance in the whole e-ink vs. LCD debate is getting very tired and old. I have said repeatedly that I have used my Nook Color in sunlight and had no problem with it because I can adjust the brightness as I choose. Kindly STOP trying to tell me what I prefer.

You aksed if anyone had ever tried to read a book on an LCD, I replied that I do it all the time, that is hardly defensive. I apologize if you took it that way.

People just prefer eink devices when reading and the opinion is that LCD causes eye strain.
An unscientific poll of a handful of people on an obscure website is your back up? Wow...

Nah, I'm going to go and sit on my lounge chair on the balcony and turn up the brightness on my Nook Color and read for a few hours straight without eye strain regardless of what some know-it-alls on here have apparently deicded I am capable of doing.

The constant 'of course if you read ebooks on an LCD screen your retinas will instantly melt' and 'but e-ink is great [for the 3 hours a year] when you'll be reading outside at the beach!' are ridiculous and give me a bad taste for the Kindle and its advertising and the Amazon-supported bloggers who spend more time attacking the ipad's death-ray glare than in praising the Kindle ("Here's a photo of me using the reflection off the ipad to fry ants on a sidewalk and to start a campfire"). I've never seen a post on here that says 'how can you read on an e-ink device, without the ability to play Angry Birds?' Ah well, I guess it's just this year's version of the old tedious Nook/Kindle arguments ("You can't get library books on the Kindle!"..."Yeah, but with free 3G I can check my email anywhere [after only 23 laborious clicks and toggles]!")

BTW, there's a good full-page cartoon in the Feb 14/21 "New Yorker" about a man surrounded by ereader enthusiasts at a party...it starts out with a guy bragging about how he can read his Kindle at a beach with no glare.

Well I vastly preferred my Kindle 2 when used under low light conditions like a normal bedside lamp, to even a device with a high end LCD screen. Maybe part of it is I stare at monitors and TVs the rest of my day, and don't want to read on one too. (Even if LCDs are vastly easier on the eyes than other active display technologies!)

The Nook Color's very high quality for what it is though IMO, but the Nook seems to have better contrast than the Kindle 2, so...

This argument is all a bit silly really.

Some people don't like reading books on an LCD screen. But everyone who likes ebooks would like reading on pearl screens anywhere. Whether or not there is a scientific basis for this preference is irrelevant. Just because something is not proven usually means we dont yet have the science to prove it. LCD screens are pretty difficult to use outside. Even in the car reading is difficult. i read a lot outside, more than just the 3 hours mentioned.

But you need a light to read the kindle in dim light, but not the nook. Kindles don't have any true apps. But you can access the internet for free in most places in the world and it doesn't take 23 clicks. (Exaggeration is a sign that you know you have lost that argument) kindle is black and white, just like a book. Nook colour is great for reading magazines and illustrations. A hacked nook has wonderful apps available.

I think there are enough differences to say they are two different beasts. And realistically that means they serve different purposes. And that neither is better than the other.

I understand your point, but completely disagree with this part. I do not find reading with an eink screen (sorry, but Pearl is not enough of an improvement to matter) in low light to be very enjoyable. You have to hassle with a lamp or book light and it never lights the screen evenly. I will chose a backlit LCD in every situation but outside in sunlight. That is the only place an eink is worth it and that only covers 5% of my reading time.

Now that is me, people that for whatever reason can't use LCD can certainly manage with just an eink device and lamps and book lights. It is nice we don't all have to though.

I would like to point out once again that this is an opinion backed up by zero science. Some people do have issues, but they are a vocal minority and I wonder if the lcd is the issues or if it is something with their eyes. I see people reading on iPads and iPhones all the time so it can't be the epidemic eink zealots want it to be. I still find it laughable that so many people spend 8 hours a day at work staring at a LCD monitor, but they can't possible spend an hour reading a book on one without destroying their eyes.

If you really love eink I think its great, but that doesn't detract from how great the nook color is as a reading device. I can read on it for hours at a time and I've never once had eye strain. I much prefer it to the uneven light you get from a book light at night on eink.

I own a Sony 505 and just got a Nook Color yesterday - before I got my Sony I had a Palm T|X and before that an old Compaq iPaq.

I've read hundreds if not thousands of books on LCD screens (I got the iPaq years before I got my Sony), and a good couple of hundred on EInk. Maybe there's something weird about my eyes, but I can and do read on either technology.

EInk is great for long sessions - it's easy on the eyes and the battery lasts much longer.

The NC is better in low light, and if I'm reading comics or other graphic material.

Given a choice, I'd go with both. (Oh right, I did.)

Well, I did say "But you need a light to read the kindle in dim light" so perhaps to satisfy you completely I should have said "But everyone who likes ebooks would like reading on pearl screens anywhere where the lighting is good" maybe?

Or maybe the science just isnt good enough yet to take into account all factors. We know so little about the brain and nervous system so we shouldnt assume we know it all.

You cannot legitimately say that "everyone" would like pearl screens.
