The technology has not come yet with a good LCD or monitor replacement. That's why big companies, like the one I work for, want you to take short breaks every hour or so and give you screen filters or expensive flat screen monitors, to reduce the glare and eye strain.

I'm in IT; to me, spending 6hr+ on a monitor daily basis is not fun, but I gotta work and pay my bills. I enjoy what I do for living but I would replace a monitor with something else in a blink of an eye, if that replacement exists, unfortunately, there is nothing like that yet.

We use monitors at work because there is no other choice. For e-reading though, eink is the new alternative.

I'm in front of a flat screen LCD for 8 hours a day at work and have no issues coming home and reading for hours on my nook color. I know there are people that suffer from eye strain, but most don't and I have certainly never had an issue. There is also no real science that proves staring at LCDs is bad for your eyes. Some people have eye strain issues, but many people have those issues reading on paper. Eye strain has been around a lot longer than computer monitors. It is usually more of a lighting issue than anything else.

I am more comfortable reading on my Nook Color than my eink nook in every situation, but outside in the sun. However, I only read outside about 10% of the time so its not a major issue. I find Amazon's new kindle commercial funny as the only way they could find to criticize the iPad was showing it outside in direct sunlight at a pool. I guess that was because the iPad kicks its ass everywhere else.

If people have eye strain issues with LCD by all means get a eink device, but if you don't then get a nook color. It is well worth reading even plain text novels on that beautiful screen.

Hmm, I still prefer reading on the kindle and doing other things on the nook. I dont like bright lights, I am always turning off the lights at home when others want them on. Good that it works for you, but not for me. I havent tried a colour magazine on the nook though, and I think children's books look amazing on it. But for straight out reading for a couple of hours, I can only do this on the kindle or other ink device.

If you're addressing me then I am simply replying to someone's statement. You're right that this subject has been beaten to death yet people still make the same statements about how difficult it is to read on LCD. This is not so for everyone. There is nothing wrong with correcting erroneous statements.
No, I wasn't addressing you. I was addressing the posts you were replying to at that point in the thread. I agree that if people keep making such statements, it is proper to reply. I just wish they'd stop.

I originally got my Kindle (used) for 2 reasons. (I already had an eink reader.) 1) {lesser reason & no longer applies} so I could buy books from Amazon, & 2) to use the highlighting for when I find OCR errors in my proof reading of books I scanned. The NC works better (for me) for the second reason plus (rooted) it functions as a nice Android tablet.

As someone mentioned, none of them is perfect but I have found the NC works better with Calibre than my EZ Reader and I haven't even picked up the Kindle since I got the NC for Christmas. {Anyone need to buy a K1? or an EZ Reader?}

I'm always going to have an eInk reader until I can get my sticky fingers on a Pixel Qi(or mirasol) screened tablet. Why? You might ask, because eInk is actually readable in sunlight/brightly lit rooms/areas unlike ANY LCD.

To that end, my PRS-505's batt's beginning to show signs that it's about time to break it down and replace the batt, so I picked up a $100 Kobo-WiFi(not nearly as nice as the Sony but seems more hackable which is always fun) from Borders in the likely event that I don't get around to it before the batt can't hold a charge for more than a few minutes any longer...

For me tablets/LCDs are nice for dark/poorly lit/night reading, PDFs, and misc. other things that require greater responsiveness and framerates hence the reason for me to also own those types, but w/Pixel Qi or mirasol I could get the very best of both in a single device, although I'd still waffle between 10" for home use and 7" for carrying around just because of form factor manageability... (and 10" is really nicer for some things like PDFs... )

I wish the same however, there are a few people here who take EVERY opportunity to spout misinformation, especially about the Nook Color. No signs of stopping anytime soon it seems.

Sorry but I'm afraid you're wrong; the ability to turn up the brightness makes reading on an LCD in the sun or in bright light perfectly doable.

Go to the beach 11 am and try to read a novel for 2 hrs. Try eink and try LCD, then let us know.

Grimm, please be honest with yourself and recognize the pros and cons of each technology.

I usually try to stay out of these discussions but this time I just can't. TO YOU in proper light conditions an E-ink screen provides a better experience. Doesn't mean that other people feel the same way.

I had an E-ink nook and then bought a NOOKcolor. I thought I would only be using the color on occasion. However, I enjoyed reading from it so much that I gave my E-ink nook to my son. I only read on my NOOKcolor. I read several hours a day. Sometimes (when my busy life permits) I read several hours at a stretch. I have no issues with eye strain.

I find reading on the color a supremely superior experience. But that's MY opinion. Others are entitled to their's. However, don't try to foist YOUR OPINION off on me (or others) and basically imply that our opinions are wrong.

Is it really such big deal that people enjoy reading on variety of different devices? What does it really matter? Just be happy people are enjoying reading no matter what the medium is.

/end rant

No one is trying to impose others opinions but it is just not true that with direct sun light an LCD screen just reads better than a non reflective screen, that's just not true. Even here on this site, when reading pure text or novels you'll find that majority of people prefer eink devices.

If you like your Nook Color fine, enjoy, but let's be clear about the pros and cons of each technology, aside of passionated debates or personal preferences.
