![]() ![]() Another funny loo item: When we built the house twenty years ago we weren't connected to the sewer. Everyone had a septic tank. Our next door neighbours had a toilet under their house but because the floor was lower than the septic they installed it on top of a four foot pedestal with stairs leading up to it. It really was the Throne Room. edit: you would really hurt yourself if you fell off ![]() Last edited by wannabee; 02-17-2011 at 07:53 PM. |

Twenty years ago some friends of mine bought a week-end house along the Japan Sea coast. It was a very traditional old farm house, with a typical Japanese squat toilet. These are set flush (no pun intended) to the floor. They ordered a western style toilet, which at the time were fairly unknown in Japan, and hired a contractor to install it for them. When they arrived the following week-end, they found that the contractor had done a very neat job of installation, except for the fact that he installed it with the seat flush with the floor!

Could be worse, you could be using a two hole outhouse in a Canadian North winter (-30º C), nothing quite like chipping the ice off before using :P

I knew you weren't kidding, he told us about poop cones a while again. He mentioned his shovel had broken so we asked him what shovel, he said the one in the outhouse, we asked him why he had a shovel in the outhouse .... Thus began our education into poop cones! In cold weather environments in the Marine Corps the heads got cleaned too often for that to be an issue. Of course cleaning them brought on its own issues since the accepted way was to cover the frozen waste with kerosene and light it on fire. Of course it would not always burn evenly so someone had to be there to monitor and stir the mixture to make sure it was all consumed. Not the most pleasant of jobs!! |

![]() ![]() ![]() I'm reminded of growing up in Wisconsin in the '40s '50s, Many places had not yet installed indoor plumbing, including my grandparents; so it was the ol' outhouse, or visit the more progressive neighbors. When the Montgomery Ward catalog was used up, the outhouse had corn cobs for tidying up after. There were two boxes of them, one for the red ones and one for the white ones. The red box was bigger, because the idea was to use two red ones, then use a white one to see if you needed to use another red one. |

Up here on Sawyer Lake in WI there used to be a bar called Red & Irenes. It had 9 bar stools and no tables If you needed to use the bathroom you were told to go out the side door and turn left at the oil tank. Out houses were the world's first unisex toilet. This bar had a juke box where the songs cost a nickel but there were only 20 songs. If you won the shake of the day you had to put half in the juke box, which meant you played every song once and half of them twice!
