So will a partnering between MS and a cell phone company be a failure again?

Cell phone companies and MS have had partnerships in the past, in 2003 it was Motorola, anyone have a Motorola "Blackberry Killer" Q? Again in 2005 MS and Palm got together and that again ended badly. My favorite one; MS and Nortel, they got together in 2006 and in 2008 Nortel went bust, coincidence, perhaps

"An alliance between Microsoft and Nortel announced in July 2006 … included three new joint solutions to dramatically improve business communications by breaking down the barriers between voice, e-mail, instant messaging, multimedia conferencing and other forms of communication”.

What happened? Nortel declared bankruptcy two years later.

It is amazing how the Microsoft of today is still looked at through the lens of history by many people. Qt isn't going anywhere nor will it be "owned" by Microsoft.

Why is it when Apple and Google of today do the same things that MS of yesteryear did they get a big fat pass?

Well, when Oracle bought Sun (what? Last Year) there was a lot of FUD wrt Java....still is for that matter with some of the recent moves.

Because that is one of the more reliable metrics to gauge a company's future behaviour. It's fairly simple, their primary purpose is to make money and for 35 years they've done that exceedingly well with their methods. No can deny Microsoft's brilliance.

As it is, there's no shortage of uproars about Apple too but the focus of this thread at the time was the Nokia phone. Google on the other hand have yet to really throw a major spanner in the works (the Android system may end up being a battle ground).

I have Verizon and refuse to give them an extra $30 a month for a data plan. I know I would love having all the bells and whistles, but the cell phone is not a necessity in my life.

My phone has a camera which stopped working a year ago. Now every photo is solid green. Maybe you should drop your phone a few times, Tom.

At one time I had a T-Mobile Sidekick. It was wonderful for surfing the net, but it stopped working after only being dropped once.

Of course, the fact that it fell out of my pocket into the path of an oncoming fork truck may have had a little something to do with it.

Thats fine for a granny just kidding I don't even have cell phone, want to get a Ipad though, the price is about the same as the iphone once you factor in the accessories and 3g its a little more, but monthly charges allot less for just data and then use skype $15 a month for 500mb of 3g data plus unlimited wifi compared to $60 a month for the iphone. I would maybe think a bit more about getting an iphone if I could get a plan for data only.

Or you can do it on the cheap like I did: Get one of the Wi-Fi only iPads and avoid the monthly service charge altogether. The downside is, of course, I only have access to the Internet at home or other locations that offer Wi-Fi.
