I made bloke eat the last of the corn chips! That is one thing out of the pantry. We don't eat out very often, and rarely eat fried foods. We have lots of vegetables with nearly every meal. I love my bean soups in winter. There is not really very much to change except the cheese! I will reduce the eggs cheese and butter. I don't think I want to give up meat

I don't understand your cholesterol numbers. Maybe the measurments are different. My LDLs are 6.1 My blood pressure is about 90. Maybe I am not so bad and it is a beat up by the doctor?

I haven't given up on meat either but I get the majority of my calories and protein from veggies. Fish is good, too.

Wikipedia suggests your LDL is really quite high. Perhaps you should read about this some. If 90 is your lower blood pressure number then that's a bit high, too.

No, I didn't draw or paint any of my avatars. I'd like to.

So she is not worrying about nothing then?

I like fish and we eat it regularly. My list says I have to eat it at least twice a week. So we had some last night! yum with lots of vegetables. (and potatoes grilled with the fish and a little peanut oil - I had more than bloke!)

Blood pressure is a measure of systolic pressure over diastolic pressure, so the figure is usually given universally as, for example, "120 over 80". The numbers are actually in mmHg (millimetres of Mercury) which is a unit of pressure. If Sneaky is quoting "90" as "high", then I would suggest that this is referring to the diastolic pressure, as 120 over 80 is, in general terms, often considered the start of the "high blood pressure" region.

For cholesterol there are two measurements, one of which is a total measure of cholesterol and one of which is a ratio of two different types of cholesterol prevalent in the body. The small number Sneaky uses is the ratio (at least here in Oz, the one most often referred to) and the large number VR quotes is the total.

Cheers,
Marc

AH, good point. If we are just taking ratios then then are no units. I wasn't thinking....

Maybe I should sign up for that "Joy of Mathematics" course from the Great Courses catalog I just got...

Relax! There can be a large variation in blood pressure. You probably want to wait until you have a few days of measurements before you decide to stroke out! But seriously, go read about it and cholesterol and such. I wish you the best, SS.

Yes, and there's a thing called "white coat hypertension" where, because of anxiety, some people experience raised blood pressure at the very place they're getting it measured (the doctor's surgery).

For people who have a need/desire to monitor their blood pressure fairly regularly (eg. The Loved One), or people who experience "white coat hypertension", it's sometimes good to either buy a decent blood pressure monitor, or find a chemist that provides blood pressure checks gratis (as I read some do). We have our own blood pressure monitor and have been trying to measure once-a-month (though we're trying to get to once-a-week). The doctor loves it because I print out The Loved One's data and graph it, and the doctor can see changes over shorter time periods than just the 6-monthly checkups.

We should also mention here the doctor's standard measuring equipment for blood pressure: the sphygmomanometer. Not for any reason, but just because it's a really cool sounding word.

Sphygmomanometer. Sphygmomanometer. Cool, see? Sphygmomanometer.

Cheers,
Marc (try saying that three times fast)

Having my third one done on Monday. Fingers crossed it will be better than the last two. I don't usually have high BP, but January was very stressful. Hopefully things will improve soon.

Man you are so technical with your fancy talk! the printout would be useful if you have BP problems. It sounds like you have your household well under control in that department, and TL1 should remain in great health.

if you are using "dairy spread" unless it is yogurt based, that might be part of your problem. see how much hydrogenated vegetable oil it has in it
