I love salty licorice, been a very long time since I could get any though. When we were younger, my grandfather gave us Sen Sen and another brand of very salty licorice, he loved the old black licorice.

One thing most people don't know, I sure didn't, is that when Durian is ripe it falls from the trees. You see people in the Durian groves/orchards<?> wearing helmets, the trees can be tall and the fruit can weigh up to 3-4 kilo's each.

Durian! Thank you! I never knew the English name. It's very popular in Taiwan, where I used to have it a couple of times a week. Kinda miss it. Like chou tofu, once you get past the smell, it's quite tasty.

I've lived on four continents and visited the other three, so my culinary repertoire is pretty broad. Having spent the past dozen years in Asia, I noted a number of never-agains that are staples in my family -- chicken's feet and soy products (from soy milk to thousand-year eggs) jump out at me. Still, I was surprised at the number of things I haven't (yet) experienced.

Some other culinary trash and treasures I've tried that I haven't seen mentioned here are stinky tofu, duck's tongue, turtle, fried grasshopper, scorpion, rat, cat, dog, calf's brain, offal, rocky mountain oysters, bird spit soup, pig's ear, crocodile, kangaroo, dirt (yes, dirt), and live slug.

But of all the things that have passed my lips, the only ones I can swear on a stack of Bibles that'll never do so again are balut and marmite -- and I'm not sure about the balut :-)

I wouldn't be surprised if the used mixture is different.
If nothing else, the used sugar will be different, I guess. Saccharose vs. Corn syrup.

There's worse, IMO. How was cheese invented? Not the lactic acid kind. The one that uses enzymes from a calfs stomach. There's no way this is not disgusting.

I wonder how many dislikes for foods are due to our first encounters with badly made first dishes/exposures.

As a small child I ate some REALLY REALLY bad lasagna. It was about 10-15 years before I let someone convince me to try it again.

A long time ago I knew a Filipino family well and helped them fix up their house. Naturally I ate whatever they had to eat. One of the things that they "home made" was a raw fish/vinegar/something? sauce. I looked at the raw fish pieces floating in the bottle and had to tell myself that it didn't kill them, so why not? I don't know what it was but it was great! I'm willing to bet that if I even could find a Filipino restaurant that the sauce would be bland and uninteresting at the least.

Great news! For me at least. I've given up looking for such a restaurant, but I just did a check and found the Manila Bay. You guys have no idea how much I hope it's good!

I can understand how you felt about lasagna. Just about every brand of frozen lasagna I've ever encountered tastes like pure unadulterated crap. On the other hand, there are few things in life I love better than my wife's homemade lasagna. If she served it every day, I'd be three times the size I am now. That stuff is good with "o"s to the third power!

I had occasion to drink ayran when I was with a group in Turkey. We were visiting a farmer, and he was honored to serve guests his best lunch. All of us waited until the very end of the meal to go beyond a sip, then we kept the guest code intact by finishing our glasses.

But I think I'd rather face Spam and lima beans than another glass of ayran.

Lasagna is both fun to make and fun to play around with. I even used to make a Mexican lasagna with corn tortillas. I suppose that there's a Mexican name for it. All I know is that I've used a great many ingredients to make a lot of different types of lasagna.

There is one dish called "pastel azteca" [Aztec cake].

I still do make what could be considered a Mexican Lasagna, only I call it Enchilada casserole. It's not really Mexican, it's more Tex-Mex (and to a real New Mexican or true Mexican national there's a biiiig difference.)

Anyway, it's corn tortillas instead of lasagna noodles, colby and jack cheeses mixed, and chicken in a tomatillo salsa/sour cream sauce.

My grandmother used to make me drink a raw egg whipped up with orange juice every morning when I was a little kid - there is no name for this revolting cocktail that I know of, but I recommend you avoid it if at all possible...

Oh goodness, I saw that in an old home-ec textbook once! It recommended serving it to all your friends when they came over to play. Never knew anyone actually drank it! XP
