Spoiler:
When that happened to me, and I was in Safe Mode I downloaded five new cleaners. CCleaners, Adaware, Spybot Search and Destroy, and Malware bytes, and for the heck of it, Advanced System Care. All free. I ran them all.

When I went into Normal Start Up, all was fine.

Just my two cents worth.

Not that old, I got a new HD, RAM and videocard June 2009. The only thing that I can think of that might be causing this is Avast. I tried updating yesterday but it stalled and I cancelled it. I uninstalled it and I'm going to reboot now

Update:

It seemed that the aborted update from Avast was the culprit, PC booted without a problem. Now I'm reinstalling Avast. Although everything seems alright now I think I'm going to get Windows 7 within a couple of weeks or so. It's been over 1,5 years since my last reinstall so it's time for a fresh start.

It's too young to die.

Did you read my Spoiler.?When you get back into Normal Mode, delete your old cleaners and trdy the one's that you used in Safe Mode.

It worked for me.

I found the whole incident rather distasteful to be honest, but I look back at it now and laugh, both at his writing, which was very inventive, and at my squeamishness of having to deal with it, now I would just fire him off hand without thinking about it, much! I hate staff discipline.

My biggest rant, why are all the new effin employees (FRESH GRAD's) so effin stupid about the common sense things?

FSE: Is it safe to put my fingers in that machine while its running?
ME: Well do you think putting your fingers inside gears of a spinning machine is safe or even a really good idea?
FSE: Well, I guess not.
ME: Why would you ask me that if you knew it was a bad idea?
FSE: Well I wanted to be really sure.
ME: Your Mechanical Engineering degree didn't cover that?
FSE: Well maybe, but I drank a lot of beer at Uni, ha ha.

At the time I was a Manager at a large printing company, and I assure you that conversation actually happened.

Now when did the term "Manager" become "Babysitter"? I used to spend a large amount of time telling junior staff not to do things that I felt like their mother.

Thankfully I've gone consulting, which is a whole other rant

Good Luck. Probably if it made it to safe mode you could try rebooting again and come up normally and see what happens. That has happened to me tons of times on various computers...including my newest one running windows7. No guarantee.....but....

speaking of backups.....

Yep, that's almost certainly what happened.

I'm liking windows7 myself. I'd say go for the 64 bit version if you can.

Thanks Mark, I still feel like being hit by a train, but the train gets smaller and smaller. Or at least I try to believe that

Isn't that always the way it goes. I hung on to 13 year old back ups and got a call from an old client asking for a copy a month after I through them away.
