Jeff Carlson's Plague Year didn't really click with me until about half way through, so I'm glad I didn't give up on it or I wouldn't have got to read the 2 sequels. |

But, as with Ploppy, it might take a bit longer as I could read one or more books while reading the one that is more difficult to get through. And one book at a time... I have multiple readers and generally don't read the same book on different readers (unless I must finish that one book!) |

I read one book at a time. I'm a slow reader and can go through 2-3 books a month, sometimes less depending on how much free time I have. With 2 kids, a husband and a job it's soemtimes hard to squeeze in reading time.
I don't always finish a book if I don't like it. I've put a few books down because they were too distubing. Sometimes I'll put a slow book aside and go back to it a few months later to be finished if I have nothing better to do. |

So far as prose fiction is concerned, if I find the book at all enjoyable, I read it straight through. I'm not a particularly fast reader, so I try to concentrate on one major work at a time, though I might branch out to a short story from a novel for change of pace. Sometimes, though, I can't resist reading something else in tandem. Thus, recently, I was reading Uller Uprising on my Kindle and Witch World in hard copy. It's hard to resist doing that.
Poetry, which I read frequently, is another situation altogether. I will dip into poetry at any time whenever the spirit strikes. |

I am an avid reader and read quite fast. If the book is good I can finish it in a day or two (~400 pages).
I may start a book, lose interest, start another, go back to the first. I rarely have more than two that I am reading at the same time and if a book is really bad then I won't finish or go back to it. |

I always read books from beginning to end. I can typically read about 30-50 per day, if its a working day. If its my day off, I can easily read about 100 pages. If I'm really into and lost in the book a little bit more.

I tend to have one or two books (well, novels) going at a time. Right now it's Jericho Moon (Stover) and The Chessmen of Mars (Burroughs), but only because Jericho Moon arrived in the mail while I was in the middle of The Chessmen. I used to pride myself on never giving up on a book, I would read it all the way through no matter what. Then I hit a biography that was dry as dust, never did finish that one. After that I would only drop a book if it was truly painful, but finish everything else. Now my TBR list is long enough that I haven't picked up a painful book in years, so I'm back to finishing everything. And rereading some things, which I never used to do at all.
I do read fairly quickly, a short novel will only take a couple-few hours usually, though speed depends heavily on how interesting it is. I think the longest book I ever read in a day was around 900 pages, that was a day off and a really good book. That's actually one of the reasons I was so excited to get an ereader, it'll save me from dragging along so many books on trips. I can't count the number of times I ran out of books before the plane ride back home. |

I read a book all the way through. In my paper days, I might flip around a book to see what is going to happen, but I always read a book to the end.
I'm very picky about what I choose to read and I do not commit myself to reading a book unless I have some reason to finish it (such as enjoying it, progressing through a series, or wanting to read a book that is often referenced elsewhere, like one of the classics.) My reading moods fluctuate, and I generally have several books going at once to suit whatever type of story I happen to be craving. I have the 100 book counter in my signature, but realistically I'll be happy if I manage to get through about four a month, which is a long way from 100 for the year. |

Read fiction and non-fiction.
I give all my books the 50 page rule. If the book doesn't grab me in the first 50 pages I'm done, move to the next. Also use the accelerated reading method. Not speed reading just efficient reading. Using this method actually increases comprehension and speed by calibrating your eye motion with your brain. The brain can receive information faster than your eye can give it. As with many skills takes practice and everyone's mileage will vary. And no I'm not one of those hand skimmers who claim to read a 1000 page book in 30 minutes. ![]() |

I read one book at a time from beginning to end. It might be in one sitting or spaced out as time allows.

I don't think I have EVER read one book in one sitting. Well, perhaps, since I was eight years old.

One book at a time, start to finish.
As for speed it depends on the subject. Star Trek I devour like an extended episode. So it rarely takes me over 3 hours to read one. Same with Star Wars. Other books I average about 100 pages an hour. It seems I take in multiple lines at once almost. If its non-fiction stuff like Flyboys it takes me longer. |

A book has to be pretty bad for me not to finish it. If I've invested money or time in buying or borrowing a book I want to make it worth my while. Years ago when I had more time I'd always ALWAYS fiinsh every book I started. Now I just haven't got that luxury but I do give all books a fighting chance to hook me, lol. Rarely will I give up in the first half.

I read straight through, start to finish, and generally just one book at a time--or at the very most one fiction and one nonfiction at a time.
If a book is going slow or not keeping my attention, however, I'll often set it aside, usually for months (or longer), until I hit the right mood for that particular book. This probably happens one out every twenty or so books I start. Every now and then I run into a book I'd hoped to like but don't (just really, really don't)--I have no qualms about walking away from those. This happens probably once out of every forty books or so. (Just judging but what I read and didn't read in 2010.) |
