Kind of Embarrassing, But...

How do I turn my Kindle off? There are no buttons on the back; only the switch at the top which, if held, makes the Kindle sleep- not the desired effect. How do I turn it off?

It is one of the latest models.

Loopy,

Here is what the Kindle user guide says, "To turn your Kindle off, slide and hold the power switch for four seconds until the screen goes blank and then release. To wake up or turn on your Kindle, slide and release the power switch again" (chapter 1 pg 21). So if your Kindle isn't turning off, but going to the slide-show screen saver try holding the switch on top longer after you slide it. However, many people have said that Amazon customer service recommends putting the Kindle in sleep mode rather than actually turning it off unless you won't be using your Kindle for several days. Hope this helps

Thanks so much! I thought I had been holding for four seconds, but I guess I was a little short.

Of course, there is no real reason to turn it off.... unless perhaps you are going to store it for a long period of time. The device uses very little power on stand-by with the wireless off.

Sometimes when the Kindle is acting funny I find it helpful to turn it off and turn it on again. Even though it's not a full reboot it seems to help with minor problems and takes less time away from my reading :-)
