Can someone advise me? I tried to get this, but 'Update your kindle' is still grayed out.
My question is about what should be in the root of my KDX. I bought it second-hand and it just occured to me that maybe there were some hacks on it that are preventing the upgrade. This is what is showing in the root: audible documents music system font.properties.new font.properties.orig metadata.calibre netfront.ini.new netfront.ini.orig Update_kindle_2.5.7_ WMPInfo.xml The update file is a VLC media file, can that be right? ![]() ![]() |

Thank you, yes it is a .bin file.
Is there anything in that list that shouldn't be there? |

Yes and no. VLC assigned the .bin extension to itself when you installed it, so it being described as that type in your directory listing. However, this .bin file is assuredly not a media file -- as described in Amazon's instructions, you copy it to the root folder of your Kindle and execute the update from the reader itself.

These are default folders:
These have to do with a font hack:
This is a file Calibre uses (delete it if you don't use Calibre on your computer)
This is probably the official firmware update downloaded over wireless (it looks like the file name is truncated):
I'm not positive, but I think this came from using Windows Media Player to transfer music to Kindle.
The official firmware probably won't install until you remove the font hack. (the newer versions don't have this limitation, but if you're seeing the update file just sitting there, you probably have an old style hack). If you don't know which font hack was installed, (you need to know this to remove it) click Menu > System and look at the firmware version at the bottom of the screen. Anything in addition to 2.5.x is a clue to which hack is installed. Last edited by trekchick; 01-09-2011 at 02:30 PM. |

Does anyone know what those extras after the Kindle version mean? If they indicate a hack, which one so I can remove it? ![]() |

Looks like the font hack. Ask the question in the thread under Amazon Developers and I'm sure one of the techies there - possibly the great NiLuJe himself - will let you know how to remove it.

There is usually an appropriate uninstall.bin when you download the original hack, but best to check with NiLuJe to make sure.

Thanks. I bought this DX second hand and didn't install a font hack myself, so apparently it arrived with it - hence I have no removal tool. I will ask the wizards at the Developers thread.

There is a "reset to factory settings" option. Do that and you should be able to do the upgrade. You will lose all your books and collections though, so make sure you back up anything you can't re-download for free.

A factory reset should not wipe out the archive and the free books should be in the archive.

![]() Yes, I think a factory re-set is the easiest solution. I'll just back up my 18 pages of books and then transfer them back afterward. It's a pain, but less of a pain than doing them from the archive, and adding back in all the ones I got from other sites. Oh well! =} Last edited by pendragginp; 01-11-2011 at 08:17 AM. |
