Me too! I didn't really consider that it might get on peoples nerves. I'm having a think about where else I can put the info - maybe on my personal profile instead.

Everyone here was a clueless newbie once. No one is born knowing how to use even simple electronics. The trend here to be condescending and downright rude to those who are new to ebook devices and ebooks in general is getting on my last nerve. If I had been treated this way when I first came to Mobile Read, I certainly wouldn't still be here now. Is this really what we want Mobile Read to be known for? A place where newbies are afraid to ask anything in case they're ridiculed?
No matter how stupid a question might seem, and no matter how tired we get of being trolled and/or spammed, being rude to people isn't going to help matters.

Up until now we all thought he was just being inattentive (I think some of the teachers they've had just plain suck too). Unfortunately the school they attend doesn't believe in holding kids back a grade. "It's bad for their self esteem" they say...my butt. How do they think they (the kids) feel watching all the other kids get good grades while they bring home C's and D's...or worse.

Just last night my son turned to me with tears in his eyes and said "Mommy, you know what? I'm never going to get an A, no matter how hard I try".

Just my 2 cents.

Learning disabilities can be hurdles or they can be crutches. I think your son can get an A, and I think he can earn it (as opposed to getting what amounts to a pity grade). Futhermore, once he does earn one he'll see it's possible. Failure only occurs if he gives up. Once the "why bother" thinking sets in, rooting it out will make an A on a report card seem like tic-tac-toe in comparison.

Also, I found these:
Inspirational quotes by people with learning disabilities
A Parent's Guide to Helping Kids with Learning Difficulties

The 2nd one was started by Charles Schwab (the billionaire investor whose name is above); he and his son apparently have learning disabilities.

It's going to be a long road for you and your kids, but it doesn't have to dead-end at a failed school system. Think of it this way: I don't know you or your kids, and I believe you can do it.

Good thing I don't notice that stuff. Every time I have a dumb question MR members are only too pleased to assist. Why even today I was shown some basic stuff. So thank you to alll the members that really are helpful.

Yeah, SS, it was that way when I got here, too. And (I think) because of my post count and karma count, when I ask something, I am still usually treated courteously. But I am seeing more and more, a disturbing trend to put down and make rude or snide remarks to newbies asking questions, and it really upsets me.

I blocked out the tickers a couple of days ago, before I developed a fit and fell into a tantrum. Firefox's Adblock plugin did the trick.

Worse, Bill Bryson has not written a new book for ages.

Really folks, how much room do these *tickers* take up?

And as for the newbies: I was welcomed with open arms, and given all of the help and encouragement that was possible.

Let's get our priorities right folks.

Okay, I've may have chopped this ruthlessly to serve my own ends, but I definitely agree with the above combined statements.

Incidentally, nohmi, have you seen Bryson's book, At Home: A Short History of Private Life ? I've not read it, though it's on my to-buy list.

Cheers,
Marc

I removed mine as well and added a link to my 100 books thread on GoodReads in my signature. Ironically, GR is more a commercial site than my little gif was. If people care enough to see what I'm reading (which I highly doubt in the first place), they can look there. I'd rather take it down now and save the modstaff the trouble of having to ask me to remove it later and save everyone else the trouble of raging about it.
