No need to rush things. Some folks hate any kind of graphic in sigs. Some enjoy them. Let's wait and see how things go, hey?

At least they are not those horrible migraine moving thingys. I went to a book review site where most of the avatars and signatures had moving gifs in them. There is/was a member here with one. I found it so disturbing that I couldn't read the reveiws.

I know there is probably a way of stopping them, being lazy I just don't go there.

KK, can you clarify here how the tickers work? I understand what they are counting (the rather impressive Challenge so many are participating in, and which I would find terribly intimidating

), but does this ticker also work with "credits" like that old dragon egg thing did? I know that that old one caused performance issues with the forum, though I haven't noted, or seen anyone note, any such issues with the ticker.

I can't really address the dragons as they were in their last throws of existence when I came on board. it wasn't until llama, psock and other infestations occurred that I realized it was a virus unique to MR

. to the best of my knowledge they are not gifs of any kind, no animation, just a tiny picture that is taken off of another site that you update every time you read another book. a fun way of keeping score and showing off to the rest of the crowd. they shouldn't slow anything down at all. as for the rest of cherry's sig, as I recall it was certainly smaller than many others even with both images combined. some folks have a whole slew of their books across their sig, one fella' even is advertising his ebay stuff, and it is nothing like that

Don't worry, I know about the dragon egg things.

They worked with "credits" whenever they were viewed, and it became a Moderator thing (there were performance issues associated, and possibly other things - before my Moderator-time).

I just wondered if there were similar viewing "credits" associated with the tickers - that at the site they're hosted on there was some kind of 'reward" for them being viewed here as well (that would add another curl to the coiffure).

FWIW, sigs are one of the constants in the MR Star Chamber, for both reporting and discussing. There is as much discussing in there where the line is as there is here.

no, the ONLY movement is generated by the owner of the signature, and nothing affects anything on the home site of the tickers

Sneaky, what web browser do you use to browse the web? Microsoft Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera, Safari, etc.? I ask, because the way of "stopping them" is far easier than you may think, and has significant benefit elsewhere for relatively small effort.

You can tell which IE version is is by clicking the ? icon at the right side of the screen, and selecting About Internet Explorer.

If you are using IE8 (though something else, anything else, is strongly recommended), click Tools/Internet Options. Select the Advanced tab. Scroll down to the section labeled Multimedia, and uncheck the box labeled Play animations in web pages" Restart the browser. I believe that will do what you want.

I just did it without restarting anything and I can see that the little smilies have stopped already. I also unticked sounds

I just added my "One Book in 2011 Goal" ticker as a joke, but the truth is, I rather enjoy seeing how other folks are progressing toward their goal. But since apparently some folks are getting bent out of shape over the small stuff, I did a preemptive strike and removed mine.

It must be nice to have a life so free of worries that you can afford to let trivial things like tickers get under your skin.
