Kindle DX might be a good fit...larger screen for those PDF patterns.
The free 3G browser is the killer feature for me, and for someone without wifi in the house, seems like it would be even more so. While the Kindle can't do library books (unless you're willing to strip the DRM and convert them), in your wish list, you listed free access to gmail well above the ability to access library books. The Nook can do the gmail and the library books, but it has a smaller screen than the DX, not as good for reading PDFs in the car, and if email is a big deal, as it is for me, I like the real keyboard on the Kindle far better than the Nook's interface for typing. A color tablet of of some kind does sound like it would be good, especially for reading in a car at night (you'd need a book light for any of the eink readers), but that free 3G is a hard bennie to beat if you want it. I'd think that being able to comfortably read the stuff you want should take priority over other features. It would be best if you could get your hands on a few different readers and actually try to read a sample your intended content on them before deciding. In this case maybe an iPad would be ideal, aside from the price. |

Her husband probably doesn't want wifi in the house for health reasons. Or that would be my guess, I could be wrong. For the same reasons people are fighting to not have it in schools.
You can tether the Nook Color to your phone if you want to browse the internet. If I wanted a reader for the reasons you posted, I would choose the Nook Color. Especially with the recipe videos to come. That looks pretty cool. |

- we work from home, and, for part of the work, they do not want us on a wireless connection... I suppose we could set up a second, wireless connection, just for me but I'm not sure i want to go that route
- reading your posts is helping me prioritize - can library books be downloaded and read on laptops? |

Certainly. In fact even to get them on your reader, in most cases, you have to download them to a computer first, using the Adobe Digital Editions reader app.
As for whether you'd ENJOY reading books on a laptop...well, I don't. ApK |

Update....
it isn't so much a matter of whether or not we have wi-fi. The more important issue is that our cellphones do not have dataplans, and, when we go on extended car trips I would like the option of checking my email. And spur-of-the-moment-need-to-look-up-an-address or phone number. Am I right that the only ereader with free 3g that connects to the general web with a general browser (rather than 3g that is restricted to a particular store) is the Kindle 3g with its 'experimental' browser? |

If accessing mail and a browser on the go is worth more than library books to you, then you would be better off getting the Kindle. |

Color or black and white Nook?
I used to be an avid reader of this site, but, alas, time got the better of me. So I'm out of date regarding my e-reader choices. Members of this site helped me a lot with my first e-reader purchase and now I'm back for more words of wisdom.
I had purchased a Sony 505 and it's ok for general reading. However, now I would like to be able to purchase reference books (i.e. business) and I've always been in the habit of dogearing the pages, writing notes, and highlighting things. I've tried downloading the Kindle and Nook apps for PC but other than reading the book and bookmarking, that's all you can do. Color display isn't a deal breaker for me and I'm not sure 3G would be dealbreakers either, although I'm sure it's a nice feature. Proprietary book formats is not something I'm a fan of but for the right device (and price), might reconsider. I'm lusting after an iPad, but that just has to wait until later this year. I still think I want a separate reading device to control the urge to get distracted with checking email, etc. The Nook looks like it would fit the bill, but I'm wondering if the black and white version would let me scribble in the margins and highlight passages. Your thoughts? |

You can take notes on the Nook but it is suppose to be a bit of a pain in the butt. The Kindle allows you to take notes, highlight, and use the dictionary very easily. There is also a website you can go to to look at your notes and highlighted passages off of the Kindle. This is handy if you want to print something out or are looking for a specific note or highlight.
