Actually someone walked up to me and said "Don't drop your Kindle" while I was holding the door for them. They then proceeded to tell me that they have an iPad >_< haha. |

I was at an academic conference last month, using my Kindle to display notes for my talk. I was clearly an early adopter on that, though many smartphones used to similar effect. One person saw me with it and immediately started telling me how she used it for grading papers, reading pdfs, etc. -- same thing I got it for.

I've been looking at the Kindle for a while waiting for the technology to catch up to what I wanted it for: personal documents, ability to annotate, easy on the eyes, cheap, low power use. The K3 is there, barely. But I am thrilled with it so far. A colleague was skeptical thinking that I wanted to use it way outside its capacity, but seeing how others here on these forums have hacked it, I know I am just pushing Amazon's envelope, not the Kindle. By the way -- why is there no alarm clock!? Seems like such a simple thing... |

Being in a small town, technology tends to run at least a year or two behind here. Considering specialty eReaders are only now starting to take off, it is hard to say how long until they become mainstream and actually become replacements in libraries and other locations.

I have seen a couple... I see nooks when I go to B&N since I think people take advantage of the free hour of in store reading...

Recently had my third sighting this week and a high density at that. Spotted 2 guys on the train having a small geekout with Kindles and hand held GPS devices.

I have had a few people comment on mine. One woman just a couple of days ago asked about it--said she had asked for one for Christmas, so I put it through its paces for her.

I don't think I've seen another in the wild except at science fiction conventions. But I live in a small rural town in Tennessee, not really a hotspot for that kind of thing. |

Perhaps it's because I'm in Oaxaca, Mexico, but I looked for a Kindle in the wild for well over a year. I wanted to see one to aid in my decision to buy one. Finally, I gave up, in June, and bought a Kindle DX. Within two weeks I saw a K2 6" in the wild and then there was an absolute innundation. In coffee shops, cafes, parks. Kindles everywhere.

I am deployed on the USS Abraham Lincoln off the coast of Pakistan and I had a guy with a K3 seek me out. He heard I had a K2 and he needed help since his K3 had locked up and he had no idea how to fix it. Luckily, both models share the same "hard" reset option with the power switch.

15 seconds later I was a Kindle God! Back to the topic... I have seen probably 10-12 E-readers onboard. about a third are Kindles the rest are a mixture of Sony, Nook and other ones I had never seen before. |
