				Kindle spotting

I was so chuffed today. I was sitting in the bus on my way home and reading from my Kindle when I glanced at the girl next to me and she was reading from a Kindle too.

That is the first Kindle, or any e-reader actually, that I have seen in the wild.

I am still waiting to see my first ebook reader in the wild. Also never seem a laptop/netbook/Ipad or PMP being used in the wild either.

Starting to happen here in the wilds of Africa (well, South Africa actually, not all that wild...) where a main gripe for discussion on our leading connectivity forum is the non-availability of Kindles right now (up to three-month waiting list for everyone except US and UK customers). Disadvantage on a local flight though: being told to switch it off during landing and takeoff while all around continued to read their dead-trees books...

Some retailers are cashing in on the shortage here by offering cheap tablets as eReaders for the Christmas gift market. Oh, and the nicest Kindle line I heard from a proud owner who also has the Amazon cover for his device: "First time in my life I can say truthfully that my entire book collection is leather-bound!" |

Love it.Never seen any e-ink device except for my own. Not seen an ipad either but I've seen lots of iPhones out in the wild. Most of my family seem allergic to any form of technology - they all look at me as if I'm bonkers with all my gadgets and gizmos. The common line is "What do you want that for?" I get fed up explaining so I just say "Because I'm worth it!" |

Kindleworm, your family sounds like mine and my friends. They all think I am quite mad. I have swayed one of my work friends though from "What's a Kindle?" to 'Hmmm, think I might get one."

Saw a kindle (the smaller kind) in the terminal at the airport while waiting for a flight, recently.

I've never spotted another kindle. But plenty of people have spotted mine and asked me about it. They're always pretty impressed when I show it to them. I swear I should get a commission from Amazon. Seriously, I'm sure looking at my kindle is a way better experience than seeing it at best buy or whatever. I got a nice custom fonts, lotsa books to look at. Even my wallpapers rock.

To my left was someone doing what looked like medical transcription using an iPad. To my right was someone reading from a Nook. John |

LOL I have lost tack of the number of Kindles and various e-readers I have seen. A few months ago I saw a man on the bus with a K1 in the original cover that came with it. That was impressive.

Flying out for Thanksgiving I saw four Kindles in the same airport row as I was in. There was one to my left and two across the way. They are becoming more and more common. I did chuckle at the person I saw reading on her Nook, it was plugged in charging while she sat on the floor next to it reading. |

My family is somewhat like Kindle Worm's family and let me tell you how I manage the discussion. I emphasize what I can do with the technology, what it is saving and what it enables me to do that I would not be able to do otherwise. I have gone through a round of upgrades in my home that I have just completed that I explained by emphasizing what is now possible that could not be done before. On several ocassions I talked about what I would not be using up now that I was doing things electronically rather than manually.

I just had my first kindle-spotting in the wild today! Sat next to a woman at my kid's holiday recital and she was playing with her k3. She'd just got it, said she hadn't read any books on it yet, just playing games and using the web browser. I was a little surprised, but it seems she got it as a gift and was trying to figure out what it was for.

Perhaps it's because I live near companies like Amazon and Microsoft, but I've been seeing Kindles in the wild for quite some time now.

I wouldn't be surprised if Amazon Kindle sales for this holiday season topped their Kindle sales for entire past time. |
