I may just have to look for that.

(First MR post from my Mac).

I know multiple people have suggested it, but I love Scrivener!! It is by far the best writing software I have used. Some other good pieces of software for writing...

Final Draft (for screenplays)
Temporis (for creating timelines)

Some OK apps...

StoryMill (not as good as Scrivener imo)
MindMap Pro (brainstorming app, take it or leave it. Some find it useful, I'm still undecided)

LOL - I already downloaded Scrivener, and will be buying it middle of the month. Not into screenplays (wrote one once, years ago, and that was that).

Btw, how are you liking your Mac so far?

I was a PC guy for years (built them for a living, owned nothing but PCs, computer science major in college), but one day I just got so frustrated with the crap of Windoze that I decided to switch cold-turkey to Mac. I now have 4 Macs and no PCs and I will NEVER go back. Once you go Mac, you'll never go back!!

-papaholmz

PS - Windoze 7 doesn't change anything for me, I'm still sold out to Mac.

So far so good.

A couple of quirks - I keep wanting to use ctrl for things instead of cmd (I think ctrl is better placed, personally). It runs much more smoothly than either of my Windows machines (one of them has almost identical specs to the Mac - processor is 66MHz faster on the Windows machine but same chipset and same amount of RAM).

Still, for general use it seems much easier.

Haha, funny you say that. I had that same problem for over a month. I think anyone who switches has that problem. I use PCs at work though, so I guess you could say I am now ctrl/cmd ambidextrous

I've made a move in somewhat of the opposite direction. The angle of the MacBook Pro keyboard is not comfortable for typing, so I added a monitor, keyboard and mouse, and the only keyboard I had lying around was an old Windoze one. So suddenly I'm back to that, but I find that the Windows key functions as Cmd. The only difference is thus that Cmd and Alt have their positions reversed.

Next time I'm in town I'll get a Mac keyboard, I think.

To be honest, if I do a lot of writing on the Mac I probably won't keep with the Mac keyboard. I picked up a Macally IkeySlim on Amazon, and while it's not a bad keyboard, it's nowhere near as good as the brand new MS Ergo 4000 that's also sitting on my desk.

Say what you like about Microsoft, but they really do make topnotch keyboards. I've seen the Mac bluetooth keyboard, and while it looks wonderful, I think it would be a recipe for disaster if I tried to do any serious work on it - it's so small and tilted the wrong way.

Thanks for the tips, Lem. I'll be sure to test run the keyboards on sale at our local Macotek.

You're getting a Mac?

Too envious to post anything right now.

Actually, it arrived on Monday. Trading it for a little writing work.

That's funny. James. I'm the exact opposite. I had an ergonomic/wave keyboard for years and then I switched to a couple logitechs. Now that I'm on my MBP, I do most of my writing on it. I actually can't stand writing on my iMac comparatively, but I think that's because I find the 27" screen too intimidating for doing serious work.

I bought a Mac almost a year ago. I had a perfectly good PC (still do) but I just fell in love with that 27" monitor. It took a while to adjust to the different controls and, I have to admit, that I preferred to use my PC for a good while. I had to force myself to use the Mac and if I was surfing the web I naturally gravitated to the PC. Familiar ground, I guess. I should say here that I also use Windows machines at work so the Mac was a bit of a challenge for me. I don't know when the changeover happened - perhaps it was the day I found out that to get rid of a program I just had to throw it in the bin - but I have noticed that the PC rarely gets booted up anymore. Sometimes at work I have to stop to work out which way the delete key works - and usually I guess wrongly so I think my brain cells are totally Mac-oriented now. I doubt I will ever consider buying a PC again.

Thanks Jaxx. Looks like the vote is against the Mac keyboard (I'm talking of a plug-in keyboard instead of using the laptop built-in one), so maybe I'll go for the Logitech one. I can live with this old Fujitsu-Siemens keyboard whilst I look around.
