I've a good mind to report that for blasphemy, at least in this thread.

I already have two Windows machines living at the same desk, and if I get Windows 7 I'll put it on one of them. This isn't about which OS is best, this is about the fact I've got a Mac on the way and I want some suggestions for software to put on it.

If you do a lot with photographs, you can consider Aperture. Or Final Cut Pro if you like making movies...

The OS is software. You asked, I suggested. And you can do it with the Intel based MACs too.

Ok, now I'm mad - and NOT at anyone who's posted in this thread. UPS Ground has the Mac 3 hours (137 miles) away from here - but they aren't going to deliver it until Monday the 29th.

That's a week for less than 150 miles.

That's pure garbage.

You would think they could get it the last 150 miles tomorrow, and then deliver on Weds -but no - they get it the next 150 miles tomorrow, don't deliver it on Weds and let it sit in the warehouse until the 29th because not only is there no delivery on Thanksgiving (understandable) but there's none on Black Friday either.

I'm REALLY displeased with them.

I have Office for Mac, which I find useful, though I use scrivener for writing. I have iShowU, which copies videos from the screen, and I like that.

I'm planning on getting Scrivener unless I really hate the Mac. (Unlikely.) Office is also on my wishlist, because otherwise I'll have to do all my paid work on Windows.

Well, Scrivener is now available for windows too, but it's a version behind. While 2.0 supports "track changes" and other similar features, it also exports right to Office format...I found having MSW to pretty much be a waste of money and space.

Knock knock! Anyone home? What's wrong with Open Office or the soon to be released LibreOffice? They do just about everything that Office does, do it in less space, and can save in Office format for those of your associates who can't look past Microsoft. And Open Office/LibreOffice are already in Open Document Format, which Microsoft can't handle without an expensive add-in from Sun/Oracle.

The problem with Open Office (which I've used for years) is that its Track Changes does not sync perfectly with Word's. As a writer, all I need is a text editor, but as a working editor, I need MS Word. I have to use the software my clients use.

I've used Open Office on Linux extensively, and while it can do essentially everything Word can, it doesn't do them all the same way Word does, and that can be an issue in a collaborative environment.

If it's any help, I use Pages for my writing and export to Word 08 for Kindle (to save as html) and for Smashwords. I love Pages, though I know some don't. It's easier on the eyes and its text search sidebar function is great for showing all search items in a manuscript. Plus it now lets me also export straight to ePub and works well that way.

So it's Pages for me and Word for my day job (as a freelance copywriter). I also uses the layout part of Pages to make covers and other promo pieces. I know I must sound like an ad, but it gets the job done on my Mac without having to futz around a lot.

Lots of good options mentioned here though.

Was it you I asked to contact me offline about this in another thread? The people at LibO would like to know, and if you don't want to take it up with them, let's see if you and I can duplicate your problem, and I'll present it to them for you.

OK I can buy that - the collaborative environment. In that case it's absolutely best that everyone's using the same tool.

The Mac is here - and now it's busily downloading updates. No different from Windows or Linux that way.
