I do not own a 650, waiting for the 950, but gravely tempted. I do own a 900 which I am selling but have used it very effectively with an adjustable easel from Levenger.com.(appx $25.) Made of very light weight wood and attractive-appx. 6 ozs in weight. Also sometimes attach a 4 LED clip light(older eyes) to the top of the Sony cover folded back and set it in the easel on a table in front of me. You can also effectively use the easel in your lap. Probably not for everybody but works very effectively for me. |

Newbie here. I've owned mine for 2 months now. I agree. I bought the case with light, and I found it the same. I think those that came from the 300 series or 500 series (smaller), or previously used a cover with light may have gotten use to it. I tried for about 2 weeks, but realized it was just a lot more comfortable to hold naked. I really got lost in the read. Personally I didn't have a problem holding it without a case. It all depends on the user, I suppose. Some iPhone users (I own a blackberry), prefer an otterbox, and some a slip case, and some naked.
My logic was I'm not checking my ereader constantly, like my phone is. It's either in my pocket while on the go, and when I'm reading I'm sitting down by myself, or on the train. Meaning, while on the go, a case would be nice option, but when I'm reading I want it light and comfortable. I did find it easier to hold with the cover folded back, but it got heavy after a while. If I carried a brief case with me everywhere I went, okay,,, but I don't. Personal preference. I like my reader thin and light to be portable and easy to hold. I do have to be more careful with it. But like my blackberry I've never dropped it, and have read daily on the train and in my home. I've never dropped my reader. ![]() Last edited by supertofu; 01-05-2011 at 12:30 AM. |

I got the case with light when I bought the PRS-650 and I hated it. It made the reader much more unwieldy and I found the case really wasn't that secure. In less than a month of use the cheesy plastic clips that hold the reader in were already starting to bend and the reader would slide a bit. Why did they make sure a crucial part out of plastic?
The same thing happened with the lighted case for my PRS-600—eventually one of the plastic tabs broke, making it useless. I bought an Oberon cover for my 650 and love it. It uses the velcro attachment system, which I was unsure about, but it really is secure. The case gives me a perfect place to clip my reading light when I need it and is just beautiful to look at. -Marcy |

I recently got the Sony cover for my 650 and I think it's great. I haven't taken it off since I got it. It makes the Reader easier to handle, and of course it protects when I take it anywhere (which is just about everywhere).

I had the case with light for my 600 but hated using it. I would always remove the reader when reading. I prefer to read 'naked' so to speak
So now with my 650 I got the case with zip thing. Much better. |

I suppose I might find the OEM cover unweildly if I hadn't had a PRS-505 and -900 before. Compared to those the 650-with-case is a featherweight and easier to hold regardless of whether or not I fold the cover completely back (I do). I would like the lighted case cover to fold back slightly flatter but that is less a complaint than a desire.

It's funny how different we all are! I have the 650 with the lighted cover from Sony--and I love it! I almost never take my reader out of the cover. I much prefer reading with the cover on. To me, the reader feels to small and insubstantial without a cover. Also, I haven't had the problem Marcy describes with the plastic clips becoming loose--but that's probably because I'm not taking my reader in and out of it's cover.

I was under the impression that Oberon discontinued all Sony covers. Are they making them again, or did you get one designed for a Kindle or Nook? I really want an Oberon cover for my 650, but I don't like the thought of using a cover not designed specifically for my Reader.

I've liked the standard clip in sony covers - my 'old' (but only recently old) 505 and now a 350... the little things like the internal magnets to gently hold it closed, and so on.
I do wonder, though - how about a half-a-cover option.... one of the pleasurable things about a Sony reader is the reader's body feels good - solid, weighty without being heavy. So make it one side cover only - leave the back of the Sony uncovered with the cover closed, then when you open the cover it folds back to cover the back with one layer of leather only. And have some cool inside leather cover colours and designs.... Paul Smith etc ![]() Coops |

This is a great idea. I'd make it out of something rigid, though, and then keep the reader in a "sleeve" too. I used to have a palm pilot with a flip-around plastic cover and it worked great while adding minimal extra thickness.

I use the official Sony cover on my 650 - the one without the light (didn't like the weight of that one).
Expensive but great. Much easier to hold, as said earlier the bevel is a bit small w/o a cover. Seems to be good quality, tho I don't fold mine back and will reserve judgement on the lifespan of the plastic prongs that secure the reader. There must be little magnets in the corners to keep it nicely shut? ![]() |
