I see your point, BOb. I figure I have a pretty good overall viewpoint on it. I'm not dead set attached to that house, but I have not seen anything better yet. I'm not obsessed and if something better pops up, I"ll be all over it. My way of dealing with the "stress" of waiting is to not stress and just leave it in the hands of others (since I have no control over it anyway).

I'll be curious to hear the results. I thought it possible you knew some tricks I hadn't heard of, and I've been at this long enough to have heard of most of them.

I do as well, at least most of the time. One of my hobbies/sidelines happens to be building machines though, so I get a charge out of getting new hardware. With that in mind, one of the goals in building my production rig was a high performance-per-dollar ratio; getting 90% of the performance of a state-of-the-minute rig for 50% of the cost is a sizable win for me, so I can have the horsepower with money left over for tires.

Oh, sure. I'd have the same motivations. But what my current box does is adequate for what I do with it, and I do have other uses for the money.

I get where you're coming from now; initially I got a frustration vibe as if you were expecting a lot more in terms of performance.

Nope. I had no expectations, beyond "Linux ought to perform better on older limited hardware than XP". And in fact it does, to the point where it's usable if I'm patient.

I understood why the original owner upgraded. What I don't understand is how she tolerated as long as she did, and why the p2110 got generally good reviews back when it was new. It puts the frozen snail into "frozen snail slow under XP."

I get a kick out of "seeing what we can get out of it" as well; it's the old hot-rodder thing. In fact I recently likened it to old English sports cars; you'll never make your original investment back, and it'll never catch up to a modern BMW, so you just have fun with it.

Pretty much. I always liked things like TR-7s and MGs. You evaluate relative to their class, not against all sports cars in general.

I did a review of Tiny Core here and here, as a matter of fact.
In the first one, I also reviewed something called Kolibri; runs on 10MB RAM, the whole OS is in assembly language. Has a bunch of DOS-era games too; you might want to check it out for entertainment value if nothing else.

I'll do so. I'm aware of Kolibri - I tend to collect obscure OSes - but haven't really looked at it seriously.

Okay, I must have misunderstood you previously. I can definitely see where you're coming from with that now.

I think my real limit is disk I/O. For instance, Opera 10 for Linux invokes in about half the time Firefox requires. But the Opera build is largely static, with one external library. Firefox is a small executable, with a lot of external libraries it links against (and it can't be built static.)

So loading Opera is mostly "Find start of executable on disk. Read continuously into memory till you reach the end. Stop.", whereas loading Firefox requires linking against an assortment of external libraries, with corresponding additional I/O.

And a UDMA 4 HD imposes limits on just how fast stuff can be read off disk and loaded into RAM. (As mentioned, I think I have BIOS limitations, so putting in a faster HD wouldn't help, and the machine couldn't use the full potential.)

It's over thirty years since I had any need to speak Afrikaans, and even then very seldom, as I lived in Cape Town, where English was primarily spoken. Even all of our sixty-four staff spoke English. But thanks for the correction.

Do they still have the ostrich farms in Oudtshoorn?

Still miss the Cape at times, but love Oz.

Training multiple people to do one person's job? Are they expanding?

Unless they're making internship wages, I wouldn't worry too much as it doesn't sound like much of a cost-cutting measure.
