Mathematics will stop you. You may find it instructive to look up how compression algorithms work.

Um, wow. Good luck with that.

Yes you can compress a file over and over until it is very small-- infinitely small in fact. At this point, a single byte of data might weigh as much as 14 elephants. Gravity then takes over and the remaining data crushes in on itself to form a singularity-- a black hole which sucks in the entire known cosmos.

I don't think re-compressing already compressed data nets you any extra compression (not taking into account an excellent compression algorithm vs. a lousy one). I compressed a 443mb rar file with 7zip resulting in a 441mb file. Re-compressing that file, on ultra compression, took a good bit of time and actually increased the file size to 447mb.

Yeah, your file keeps getting bigger - imagine that.

I don't know how Collections work (I have a K1), but just on the Home Page, you can jump around by pressing the first letter of the title (like 'T'), and it jumps to the titles starting with 'T'. That helps.

I'm with the other people here who don't see the benefit of having their entire library on a Kindle. Enough for several weeks of reading it plenty for me. I have 13 or 14 pages of stuff, books to be read, lots of samples, some old favorites, etc. And I'm not planning any trips. If I were, I'd probably add a few extra books, but not a thousand extra books!

I do have everything backed up on my PC, and from there, to an external drive.

More important... I want to know when that 2 byte file is successfully uncompressed.

I'd like to know how many hundreds of ebooks the Kindle 3 could hold without seriously affecting performance.

I only have around 50 books currently loaded as I've had reset/restart issues and am loathe to put more on until the firmware is updated.

I love the fact that it switches on instantly which I'm guessing might not happen if I put all 500 ebooks on it.

I think I read somewhere in this forum that someone has loaded 500-600 books on their kindle 3 already.

I too have loaded around 60 books and have gotten the reset issues about 4 times so far since I've received my kindle. Hope the firmware really fixes it, kind of reluctant to send the kindle away for a replacement

What makes you believe that the number of books would impact performance? There's a one-time indexing cost when you first load a book, but I see no reason to expect a performance impact thereafter.

In the last few days I've sent, through Calibre, my whole booklibrary of several years(I like to browse and choose)on my Kindle.; 1128 items. Yes, I know it is probably a bit weird, but I like my books with me, I read a lot and I have trouble throwing anything away.
My PC had some trouble with it and it did cost a lot of time. That is; I didn't use Calibre before, so I had to start from scratch.
Yesterdayevening the battery was full and in the morning it was empty; I guess because of indexing?
I don't think the amount of books has any influence on the Kindle3. I can find and open a book now just as fast as in the beginning, when I only had the ones of Amazon (20 or so).

That's fantastic to know Desertblues - maybe I wrongly assumed that several hundred books might start to slow down processes like opening books up and starting the Kindle. If not that's great and you have more than double the quantity of my book collection so it means I can continue collecting ...

I'm still reluctant to load up more books yet as I'm fed up with all the restarts I'm getting rather randomly - I have stopped using the web browser for the moment to see if that improves things.
