looking at Android phones and comparing.....I think I'm ready to switch....unfortunately the one I think I want -- Droid X is behind in shipping...

. Kenny, you will love it. Even though I personally don't want one (I don't like the form factor - it's squared off and too damn big for my taste), it seems to be a HUGE hit with guys.
Chris keeps finding new stuff his will do - he hasn't had a whole bunch of time to play with it because he's been working an insane amount of overtime lately. The one problem you might run into if you want to read on it is that reading software for Android seems pretty limited. There's Aldiko which only reads ePub, but of course you can use calibre to convert. Wordplayer appears to read everything and calibre supports it already, but I thought I remembered seeing something's not working right with that - someone changed something? https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...ght=Wordplayer

Epub is my preferred format anyway.

and one reason I went for the X was the screen size so that I could read e-books on it I hope.

I certainly don't like the monthly cost....which is why I have avoided this kind of phone til now.....but I think it's time....and if I could limit my internet use I could drop comcast and use the Droid as a wireless hotspot.

I can appreciate the cost concerns, our monthly cell phone bill is simply ridiculous. But then, we have four lines on a family plan, and two of those are smartphones with the unlimited data plan. But we don't have a land line anymore, so I guess it sort of evens out.

. It'll vary depending on what cell carrier you use, though. I use Verizon so that's where I looked.
