The minimalistic nature I accept and, as someone who lives with a bit of clutter, I applaud. If, however, they lived mainly from hotels/hostels then I would be more sympathetic to this lifestyle (although as I've already mentioned I doubt it sustainable). I think the sad thing is that they are skimming across the surface of life without making an impact on it. They probably meet new people all day long, but they are just two ships passing. Meeting the strange young man who lives on his bike will probably be more memorable than the name and face of the strange young man. It seems to be a new way to prolong childhood after they can no longer do it at school. PhD in basketry?

Dippies are nothing new once you remove their "difference". I remember the beatniks from the '50s and the hippies form the '60s. Go back farther to the Bohemianism of the 1800s.

the answer may be found. I lean more towards Heinlein. Dippies, in whatever form, rely on society as a fall back. We are well off enough to support them, so they are free to live the life that they want.

But do a simple mental experiment. Ask yourself if they would survive in medieval times. Back when things were simpler - produce and live.

The fancy electronics and designer clothes will put some much needed cash into the homeless economy.

The Industrial Revolution led to massive migrations from the countryside to the town, and the way people lived - I imagine the Digital Revolution will have a similar impact.
Maybe these experiments are the first stirrings of more widespread social upheaval to come.
