Dippies are nothing new once you remove their "difference". I remember the beatniks from the '50s and the hippies form the '60s. Go back farther to the Bohemianism of the 1800s. Somewhere between Thoreau - "Most of the luxuries, and many of the so-called comforts of life, are not only not indispensable, but positive hindrances to the elevation of mankind. With respect to luxuries and comforts, the wisest have ever lived a more simple and meagre life than the poor.", And Heinlein - "There ain't no such thing as a free lunch." , the answer may be found. I lean more towards Heinlein. Dippies, in whatever form, rely on society as a fall back. We are well off enough to support them, so they are free to live the life that they want. But do a simple mental experiment. Ask yourself if they would survive in medieval times. Back when things were simpler - produce and live. |

If this is the way they want to live, I say let them. The fancy electronics and designer clothes will put some much needed cash into the homeless economy. I know the fresh meat will be appreciated. |

It's an interesting concept that I have no particular interest in.

The Industrial Revolution led to massive migrations from the countryside to the town, and the way people lived - I imagine the Digital Revolution will have a similar impact. Maybe these experiments are the first stirrings of more widespread social upheaval to come. |
