I have the prs-300 and an iPhone and will be getting a kindle 3 later this month.
I had the iPhone first. One of the reasons I bought the phone was to be able to read books on it. I enjoyed reading books on there for a year or so but it became increasingly hard to purchase content as fictionwise began to place region restrictions on most of the books I wanted to buy. The battery life was always a problem and the small screen size and backlit screen made reading for long stretches uncomfortable. Because of this I decided to get a dedicated e-book reader and went for the prs-300 because at the time I didn't want the older kindle models for various reasons and didn't want a touch screen. Plus the small size was something I wanted. The prs-300 is more than adequate and if I was in the Market for a primary reading device I would choose it again. I will also buy the kindle 3 later this month as it has a few features that the prs-300 doesn't which would be useful to me. These features are not essential or deal breaking but because of the low price of the kindle it is worth buying despite already owning the Sony. I have a K2 and two K1's (my original K1 passed down my children when I upgraded to a K2, then bought another one because my children kept fighting over the original K1). I am thinking about selling the K1's now and replacing them with K3's, plus adding another K3 for my youngest, who is now reading chapter books and is insisting that she's a big girl now and needs her own Kindle.

My middle daughter, now 20 - married with bub on the way, was fascinated with both my wife's JBL and my Sony PRS-300 and Kobo.
She asked if there might be an ereader in her Christmas stocking this year ![]() So Dad is now hunting for a cheap ereader for her which is not an easy thing to do in a country (Australia) where ereaders cost around $200 minimum. The JBL might be the winner, purchased from the US I think. In the meantime I have installed Mobipocket on her smartphone and loaded it up with a series I purchased for my wife to read, which daughter-mine has read one paperback of. My youngest bookworm, now nearly 17, is not ready to give up dead tree books quite yet. She loves the smell of old tomes ![]() |

Anyone who has ever kept a book by your bed and another by your chair will understand the lure of multiple ereaders even without synching.

I've been aware of Project Gutenberg since at least the mid-1990s, having been on BBSes and, more importantly, running my own web company as early as 1994 (!). The 100th book was the Complete Works of William Shakespeare in 1994; the 1000th book was Dante's Divine Comedy, in Italian; I'm not sure when I came along but it was between those two points I am certain.
But text only stuff on a computer: not to much fun. I spent a good piece of my career working in a typography studio -- I love books, type, typefaces and paper. "A rose by any other name ..." is not the same read as white courier text on a green screen. When Sony released its first e-reader in Canada, I was all over it at a book fair. But it was very expensive; not yet shipping locally ![]() I really love the Kindle 2i and it has re-lit my passion for reading fiction which had lain dormant for a very long time. With so much PD Kindle material online, it was three or four months before I actually bought anything from Amazon. I have experimented with removing DRM, but ultimately I don't care one way or the other as the files work perfectly well as is ... and the latest social networking opportunities (sharing quotes, favourite passages, reviews) leave me content to leave well enough alone. I've pre-ordered the Kindle 3 and may sell the Kindle 2i. When a Canadian vendor, Kobo, arrived May 1 I took the plunge and, despite some rocky initial firmware, it's a pretty nice device, too. And it gives me the ability to read library books and have access to certain titles not sold in Canada by Amazon (the Stieg Larsson are great examples -- Kobo, not Kindle, in Canada). When recommending to friends, I make the case for Kindle ... but if library books is a deal breaker, I don't hesitate to recommend Kobo. (Sony continues to be unattractively priced locally relative to the competition.) The syncing is cool: but I really have no interest reading snippets on my Blackberry when away from my Kindle; I prefer to read in longer stretches. I've tried the identical book on Kindle and Kobo and, invariably, the Kindle formatting is more pleasing. I prefer justified text, a paragraph indent and no paragraph line spacing; most Kobo titles break all three rules, most Kindle books uphold them. And, I prefer the native Kindle 2i font. So -- I can imagine staying a two e-reader household indefinitely to keep access to ePubs and library books (and to support the local Kobo team). But buying the Kindle 3? A no brainer. I expect the same will be true with Kindle 4. |

I tried for a while to maintain reading the same book on different devices. It got frustrating really fast, especially when you consider each device paginates differently.
The best reason I've ever heard came from this forum. "I've got two readers because I have two bathrooms." But, seriously - here's my breakdown. I've always hated Amazon for their sheer market control. When I was loyal to my Sony, I would get so frustrated to see the selection and pricing on the Kindle store that I eventually just became one of the sheep. Then readers got more of a market share and their stores started to be comparable. As a whole, for indie authors who are amazon fanboys, I have my Kindle. Whether you like it or not, there's no other digital marketplace so easily accessible and simple to use. Well, that and iBooks. If I'm going to purchase a "big three" book, I buy it exclusively on my nook. It's not because Amazon still is having that spat with the publishing houses, it's because I have a B/N credit card, and you get 5% off of every purchase at B&N. Their ebook store is actually the only one that still offers "club discounts" if you have their credit card. B/N also has their in store exclusive content, which is pretty lame, but it's still nice to have. My iPad is the best all-in-one device to have. I really don't like reading on it in most conditions, but it's good as a tagalong if I can only bring one device. The problem is, now I lost it and don't know where the hell I left it ![]() The Ipad probably has the neatest polish to any device, their library/store and reading app are really pretty. But, that's all they are. My Sony doesn't get much use anymore, but it's the best device I have for simple drag/drop. If I find something interesting, all I have to do is throw it on a memory card and it gets to come with me. The contrast on my 700 isn't the greatest, but I love the backlight and find it a lot easier to read at night than my iPad. If I go to the beach usually I take my nook in its neoprene sleeve. I can take that apart at least and blow out whatever sand gets in there. I went on vacation to the outer banks last week. With me came my laptop, my ipad. an ipod, and my nook. I have a problem. ![]() |
