Yep, I listen to muic on my excercise bike to raise my heart rate; but I also use it when I'm just reading.
Although I can't pedal rapidly when reading, I still think some low-level excercise is better than none at all (I also set the resistance up a tad).
The suggestion of putting the reader in a bag is a good one; you can reduce glare by forcing the air out by dipping the bag in water before sealing it (keeping the opening above the water surface at all times ).

^--- What he said! o_O. Well, I exercise pretty regularly and somewhat heavily but even at a "slow" jog I'm pretty sure I can't look down in oder to maintain balance. I use music in order to "spice up" the routine and not get bored but... a book or a magazine? I see some people doing this at the gym but I'm fairly sure that you can't do it without sacrificing a huge amount of proper exercise.

I bought the Sony PRS-300 after getting an entourage for exactly this purpose. I use a recumbent exercise bike at home during the colder months, and love reading on the Sony on the bike.

Books were such a pain, you could only put it in the little tray when you were in the middle third of a paperback, inconvenient to turn pages (pick it up out of the tray, turn the page, put it back in) etc. With the Sony, the type is on small is almost exactly the size of the paperback, page turning is easy (hit the little button), and words are never hidden under the tray. During the winter months, I tend to spend an hour a morning on the bike and love it. The last reason I got the Sony, it was cheap, one of the first like it to hit $150. Now, the new small Kindle would work well for those that like the Amazon ones better.

I use my nook when i'm on the elliptical only. I've also tried using it on the treadmill (couldn't keep my balance) and on an upright bike (got sweat on it). I do use the large or extra large fonts so I can actually read - it's too hard to focus on anything smaller while moving...

As for the heart rate monitor thing... well, I used a chest strap and watch, so never had to hold on to the machine the whole time. (which, FYI, if you are holding on all the time to any machine, it's too intense for you and/or you're getting diminished returns from the effort.). So the page turning has never been an issue, though...

I read on my Sony 505 using a completely sealed cover (MEdge Leisure cover) and love it. It makes 45 minutes on the Elliptical seem like 4 and a half minutes.

eBooks and exercise may not be a good mix. Podcasts for me.
