I've never seen a Nook but have held a Kindle and decided not to get one even before I found out how (in my mind) overpriced they were.

That would be true only if there was the Kobo or the Kobo Wifi for the same price. In that case I would obviously choose the Wifi, who wouldn't? But that isn't the case at all. I was expressing why I chose the Kobo over a Nook or Kindle at the time of buying. I'd still have gone the Kobo over the Nook if they were the same price because of all the other reasons I gave. Your selective quoting really doesn't do justice to the overall picture I painted about my love for the Kobo without all the bells and whistles.

I think the Kobo is a $99 machine. That being said, I did not mind paying the $149 to be an early adapter. My guess is the price will come down leading into the holiday season.

The Nook was my first choice of eReader, however the price point was too high (at the time) and I don't want to deal with the U.S. only restraints.

As far as WiFi goes, I am fine without out. The only time I really want it is to sync it with my iPod Touch. I'd settle for a Bluetooth sync though. I have the Touch with me all the time, not the Kobo. It'd be nice to have current bookmarks on both devices. I tend to only plug in/sync when my battery is in need of a charge.

I find the only feature that the Kobo is missing is the dictionary. This is the one "feature" I do not think is a feature but a necessity in an eReader.

The Kobo thus far is a fantasy. It wouldn't even be worth $99. the way it is now. Nothing works as promised. It is a headache and becoming so not worth it.

I think that's a bit harsh. For me at least it works just fine for the most part. I agree that it now seems over-priced considering the lack of features and the lack of testing before launch, but it's not unusable.

I have to say that my Kobo has been a pain but, after reading 15 books on it I would have to say that I love my Kobo.

In a similar line of thought my wife thinks I am a pest and a pain too but, she says she will keep me around anyway.

At least the Kobo has a firmware update coming while, I am pretty set in my ways.

Would you have paid $149. if you'd been shown all the things that go wrong? I wouldn't have. I might have paid $99. if I had been shown all the flaws and been told it would be fixed in a month or so instead of being snowed and told that I must be doing something wrong.

I disagree. Other than the font size issue (very easy to work around) I have no gripes about how it performs for reading books. The battery life is poorer than I expected, but if I power down when I'm not using it I get good battery life.

I think that for non-tech users the Kobo could be frustrating as it currently stands. But hey, all of us were early adopters (I bought mine the first day it was released in Australia) and easrly adopters seldom have an easy time of things.

I don't regret buying my Kobo at AU$199. It is still the cheapest eInk device currently available.

Well I found out about the issues pretty quickly. I bought it on a Monday and I found most of the issues with in 48 hours. At that time I made the decision to keep my Kobo. Mind you I am technical enough to find or come up with work arounds to my Kobo issues.

I am still looking forward to the firmware update.

I'm thinking that this is no longer an "if" but a "when". PC World seems to agree with me. And now with the new $140 Kindle with built in wifi, Kobo really has no choice but to slash their prices in order to stay alive.

That $139 Wifi Only version is looking pretty attractive to me.

Yeah, I'm not sure what Kobo's next move needs to be. Price cut, sure, though I'm not sure that $99 needs to be the price point. $109, maybe?

But clearly, the ePub contingent needs to be get together for some group advertising. "Buy your ebooks here (B&N)...or here (Borders)...or here and here (Sony, Kobobooks). Keep it here (your computer). Read it here (different ereaders)." That sort of thing.
