I should add here, too, that calibre makes it pretty easy to manage multiple readers. I'm a very satisfied calibre user.

>> ... Can you sync your reading over devices?

I gave up trying to "remove" DRM from a purchase ... and just bought that particular title again for my Kobo. I was at a conference only with my laptop, and made the original purchase then and there. But when I got home and wanted to read it on my Kobo ... well, you know the rest.

I've bought 7 e-Ink devices in the last few months to decide which one is right for me, only to decide none is perfect.

Nook - I'm keeping it mainly because I like the ergonomics, B&N selection, and I like the idea of having a device sold by a "big guy" that is likely to stay in the ebook business, and there are lots of third party accessories available. Battery life and lack of organization are disappointing, but not critical. I'm using it mostly for impulse purchases and library books, which make up the bulk of my reading.

Opus - I love how portable and lightweight it is, and it's support of folders makings organization easier for my purchased series books. Drawbacks are that it's a bit buggy and there is almost no third party accessories. I'm trying to find a good clip light for night reading, with little success.

Sony Pocket - packed up and ready to go on eBay, but I keep pulling it out and fondling it. It's metal construction feels more sturdy than the Opus, the light cover is fantastic, and the Collections feature in some ways is easier than the Opus folders. But I'm pretty sure Sony is circling the ebook drain, and there isn't room to hold enough books for me.

But I really can't justify three readers. I've created a nice distinction between having two - purchased books vs. borrowed books and have set up my Calibre library to reflect that. Adding a third to the mix makes it too complicated to keep track of what book I'm reading where.

You could say I have three readers. I first bought a 6" Astak Mentor because NewEgg went nuts and put on sale for less than 50% list. It's nice for regular e-Books but is difficult to impossible to use for reading my image only PDF books (which are the majority of my e-books). I liked the idea of the 5" Jetbook Lite being able to use AAs since I cart a bunch of Eneloops around for my cameras, etc. and changing low or dead batteries on the fly would be a cinch plus it had a zoom that might enable me to better read my PDF books. When NewEgg put it on sale with free shipping, I jumped on it. It works about as well as can be expected but doesn't seem to be as well built as the Mentor and I miss the 6" screen. A tablet would be ideal but battery life is less than stellar and they are too big for my purse. I'm hanging on to both since the Mentor is nice and I might be able to change the firmware someday and there is the ability to swap batteries in the JBL. Which one I'll carry will depend on what I'm going to be reading at the time.

My third "reader" is my computer displaying on my TV. Perfect for when I'm reading in bed. When I move out of my present digs into a travel trailer, I'll be able to send my computer's display to the two TVs I'll have (one in the living room and one in the bedroom) so it will be easy to read anywhere in the house (except the loo and I normally don't read in there anyway; too busy doing something else).

I have a netbook but due to the long bootup times and limited battery life, it's not really practical as a reader although it could be pressed into service if needed, especially if AC is available.

I would think it would be no more a hassle than having only one copy of a paper book to read.

I have a Sony Reader and I am keeping myself from buying a Nook. I'm not sure why I'm so attracted to it, but I do like the idea of being able to dedicate each device to a certain type of book so that I don't have to flip back and forth between books on a single device, the way I am now.

I'm one that reads two or three books at a time, usually at least one, sometimes more, that are "light and fluffy" and one "time-tested classic". If I ever finish Moby Dick -- started it back in January -- maybe I won't wish for a dedicated device just for the ones I'm slogging through just so that I can finally know what their story is. It is hard to keep at it when I have more interesting stories available on the same device.

I have readers installed on my iPod Touch, iPad and Android phone, but I rarely use them. I didn't buy them to read books, but I like to keep that option open in case I want to.

Funny how some things never really change.
Beta>VHS>laser disc>DVD>Hd DVD>Blu Ray>Directv Pay Per View
Nook>Pandigital Novel Very Very Hacked>Augen>who knows??
Augen is my least favorite since it's a POS.
PDN is probably my favorite since it's really an Android Tablet now.
Nook would be the greatest if it was color.
I'm a B&N person anyway so I use the PDN to download books.
The Nook sits in my drawer.

I touched a bebook neo and felt attracted to it instantly, sadly I didnt buy it as I had a kindle 2 during then. Then again.. today I returned my Kindle 2 when I saw the graphite kindle 3 and fell for it. If I had more money sitting around I would probably have an ipad(even though I would rather have a cintique for virtual painting) for app games and instant messaging, a kindle 3 for handy reading, and a bebook neo so that I can buy epub textbooks and keep my typed out uni notes on it without interfering my regular reads with them.

For myself, I think it is the "need to hoard" with the grass is greener on the other side syndrome. In any case I wanted a e-book reader that suited me and the kindle 3 ticks every box except for epubs (which I have decided I could live without)

I am also highly agreeable to what HarryT said in the #4 post of this thread. Sometimes I may want to use this device for this, and another device for that.

From my sig you can see I own two (between my wife and me) and I used to have an Irex Iliad.
For me the significance of listing device I own is that people get a full picture of which devices I've had experience with.
I personally wouldn't own more than one reader. That's mainly due because I can't justify such expenditure.
The only practical use for two devices I could have is to have a large screen model for my technical PDF reading, and a 5-6" model for reading non-PDF books (e.g. novels, etc.).

Well, there we go. If we don't talk about computers (two desktop and a netbook), devices I don't use anymore (Palm E2) and devices where I can read but I don't do it (iPhone), I have two e-Ink devices: Cybook Gen3 and Cybook Opus. I bought the Gen3 when Opus hasn't appeared ad I bought Opus when there was a FW with Mobipocket support for it. I keep both of them mainly because I'm lazy , and I don't want to burden me selling Gen 3 I prefer Opus because it's smaller, I don't find it buggy with FW 1.6 but I regret the lack of covers (I've asked if they can make one at etsy). And I can synchronize the books through a PC (I copy the file.mbp from a reader to the other and that's all )

Mmm... I have an iPod touch and a Pocketbook 360, and I intend to buy a Pocketbook 901 or have it as a Christmas gift. I have a large laptop and a small second-hand netbook, but I don't use them for reading.

I'm not a very heavy reader, so I admit my reading needs would do just fine reading RSS feeds and classics on my iTouch. However, when I came from Spain back to Berlin last Christmas, I found myself very strained after reading a complete novel in the iTouch (it was one of the Lupin series). Thus, I sped up my pursuit, and became enthralled by looking for readers in eBay and so on. I encountered Mobileread's Mighty Matrix and I concluded I wanted a smaller reader. Some days after joining, I was offered something I couldn't reject and took the plunge. When I returned to Spain from Berlin for good, last May, I used my Pocketbook this time, and though the flight was a bit of a bummer, I did enjoy a book comfortably this time

Now I want a large-screen reader for the PDF's coming from my university. Since Pocketbook did me a great service, I want to put my money on them. However, I'm now doubting if I should sell my netbook, since I'm really upset with its lack of processing power. If I sell it, I'll be probably buying a new one, and that would rule out the large reader...

For me, I have one dedicated reader (PRS505), and a few devices that also read ebooks (SL5500, N800, MyTouch 3g, etc). My girlfriend is in the same boat, with her PRS300 and a blackberry. I know for us, and many on the forum, we started we nondedicated readers and switched over. Also, many of us bought older stuff, and have eventually upgraded to newer and better devices. Right now, I'm happy with my 505, but I'm sure as better displays come out, and the battery on mine holds less and less of a charge I may get another one myself.

new gadget

EB1150 was my first reader because it was the cheapest one out there and I was not sure I would like reading on a ebook reader.

Cool-er purple- saw and just had to have it, I love the way it looks and works and that I can read DRM epub on it.

Pocketbook 360 came out after the Cool-er and it has the button on the side like my old EB1150 which I find more comfortable.

I think my switching around ebook readers at this point is mostly gadget love, as opposed to actually needing a new reader.
