It says brown leather (cow) case on the web site so I guess it's just the tanning process they use that creates the smell. However after reading up on tanning I now wonder why all leather doesn't smell a bit

When considering a Kindle I borrowed a K2 from a friend. He had the "official" Amazon case (which appears to be retired and has been replaced with this one which adds a retaining strap http://amzn.com/B002Y27P6O ). The case added a bit of weight but it was still easily handhold-able. I really liked the book motif it imparted.

However, I ended up getting the DX and didn't want all of the additional weight on a device that was already heavier. I chose the Octovo sleeve ( http://amzn.com/B002KQ115A ) and have absolutely loved it. No regrets. |

Mine smelled quite bad for about a week. Still smells but differently and I have to hold it right under my nose to get that.

After seeing TheLost's(Brian's) Sienna Leather Elite Kindle 2 Case from Amazon, I had to order one too. I received it yesterday. Here's a few pics. I'm very satisfied with the case. Thanks Brian!

You should have a proper case. A sleeve will give the DX no protection at all while it's not in the sleeve where a case will give some protection all the time. Why is it sleeves are thought to be good things when they are not good and just a waste of money? Last edited by JSWolf; 07-19-2010 at 02:40 PM. |

Thank you for your concern, JSWolf. In my case the product you described was exactly what I was looking for; no added weight and nothing to get in my way while reading and some bump and scratch protection while stored.

I prefer a sleeve for my DXG, too. Covers add too much weight and bulk for my taste. My sleeve gives more protection than a case would. When I'm not using the DXG it goes into the sleeve.

I just got one of the new DXG Kindles, which I dearly love because of the vastly improved screen, and I like the screen size, too - I had had a K1 since April, 2008. Wow - what a change!

I'm having trouble finding the 'perfect' cover - if it even exists. I got an M-Edge Platform that's ok - although I wish the inside were all suede feeling and not the harder leather on part of it. It's very protective. I used an M-Edge Executive on my K1 for 2 1/2 years. I didn't think I'd like the wider Executive that they're making now to accomodate the light, so I tried the Platform instead. Love the feel of the leather on the outside of the case, but I like to read with the case folded flat back, and the feel on the inside isn't as nice as my Executive cover for the K1. So I then bought a used Oberon. It's beautiful, a real work of art. I think it protects the Kindle well; however, I'm slightly allergic to wool, as well as just plain not liking the feel of wool, and when I open it, fold it back to read, I find the feel of the wool on the inside of the cover to be distracting and irritating. If I didn't have an Oberon, I'd still want one, because they're so lovely - but I'm sure glad I got it used and didn't pay full price! I think what I'd really like is a Noreve, altho I'm about spent out as far as cases are concerned. Can anyone tell me what the Noreve cases feel like on the inside, folded flat? And - does anyone know of something that's a lot like the Noreve, but not quite so expensive? I read from my new Kindle for a couple of days with no cover when it first came - silly me, I'd actually thought I might send it back if I didn't like it, but I love it. I was scared to death I'd drop the naked Kindle, and feel better when it's in a cover. As soon as I realized it was for sure a keeper (took about 2 seconds to figure that out), I started looking for that elusive perfect cover . . . |

Oh, thanks for showing that pic of the cover from Boxwave, Brian! I've just ordered that exact one, but wasn't able to find out if it would flip completely back like that. Your pic shows that it does. Of course, I'm also still waiting for the K2 to get here to put in it. :-)

Good luck then. If you drop the DX while it's not in the sleeve, you have a higher risk of it breaking. Basically, a sleeve is a silly thing. A cover is what you should really have. A sleeve give no protection at all when the device is out of the sleeve. A cover gives some lever of protection all the time.
