Thank you! I've upgraded, installed KUAL and MRPI then installed the hotfix via MRPI. Now to look at all the packages! |

Hi there. I've been trying to jailbreak my Kindle 4 in advance of Amazon ending support later this month, and I'm having some issues with a persistent U007 update error code when I try to do the MKK Update. Here's what I'm working with:

Help with KUAL: I have never done anything like this. I have tried following the step by step on the kindlemodding page, I got the jailbreak part down but I cannot get passed the "application is not signed by a registered developer" error message on the kindle. I have a very old one from 2009. HELP the layman

Alright, I think I am losing my mind. I must be missing something really obvious and I am tearing my hair out.
So, I have a PW1 (B024 serial), downgraded the firmware to 5.4.4 and installed the jailbreak according to intructions on threads around here. It seems to already have the MKK hotfix. No issues there. Now I want to install MRPI and KUAL and... nothing is happening? How do I start these? Did I copy the stuff to the wrong folder or something? How do I get KUAL to actually install? This is what my kindle looks like right now: ![]() What am I doing wrong? I would like to actually get KO reader to work because the downgrade nuked all my collections and seems to think all of my books were added today and that's annoying AF. The issues is precisely there: you not understanding what's the reason your installing various things and what the KUAL not opening boils down to.
So let's try and spell it out: any jailbreak and any jailbreak hotfix that was released before April 2025 contains / "bundles" MKK ( = developer certificate keystore + some other stuff) with certificates that expired in the middle of April 2025. So the things you have in that MKK folded you see (and another location that you don't see over USB cable) that was put there by installing that ancient jailbreak installer has been useless for more than a year now. Since nobody cared enough to update that jailbreak archive nor old hotfix in NiLuJe's snapshots thread after jailbreaking and installing hotfix you're still in broken / not working state, so you need to install another thing to replace the expired certificate with a valid one. This: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...postcount=1295 ("K5 ALL" is the one you use for PW1) And you also need to download and install the latest version of KUAL that's been signed to use that new certificate instead of the old, expired one. You get that from the first post in this thread. Don't use azw2 file / "kindlet" KUAL on a PW1, install the "booklet" KUAL ( = installer.bin). Remove the old KUAL azw2 file from the "documents" folder first. And one more thing: you didn't "install" MRPI correctly since your screenshot shows "kual-mrinstaller-1.7..." folder that's not supposed to be copied to your Kindle : only the content inside THAT folder goes inside "extensions" folder ( = so you end up with "E:\extensions\MR Installer\" IIRC the actual name MRPI extension uses) on your Kindle. And also you will need to update back to 5.6.1.1 after you jailbreak AND install the latest jailbreak hotfix (needed so your jailbreak survives firmware update) + restart 2 more times. Then after firmware update AGAIN do hotfix installing + install DevCerts bin + install KUAL bin. Last edited by shamanNS; 05-17-2026 at 02:58 PM. |

And thank you for taking the time to spell everything out step by step. I feel like all of this info is out there but split amongst several threads and some of it is not terribly clear for a newb. |

And another total newb question: how to check that the jailbreak/hotfix is now correct?

If hotfix and/or KUAL installer bin has installed without any errors the jailbreak works.
If using ;log search-bar command outputs some text at the top of Kindle screen hotfix did its job. And if KUAL now opens you fixed the DevCerts / MKK issues. |

Kindle DX (B004, FW 2.5.6) - MRPI not triggering, KUAL cert error persists after KeyS
Quote:
Hi all, I've been trying to install KOReader on my Kindle DX (serial B004, firmware 2.5.6) to read CBZ comics fullscreen, and I'm stuck on getting MRPI to run. Here's what I've done so far: - Jailbreak installed successfully ✓ - MKK installed successfully ✓ - DevCerts-20250419 KeyStore installed (used the B004-specific .bin) ✓ - MRPI extracted to root: /extensions/mrinstaller/ contains bin, data, lib, log subfolders plus config XML, credits TXT and menu.json ✓ - /mrpackages/ contains Update_KUALBooklet_v2_7_37_install.bin ✓ - KUAL-KDK-1.0.azw2 is in /documents/ ✓ Problems: 1. KUAL still shows "This title is not signed by a registered developer" even after installing the keystore with wifi off. 2. The ;log mrpi command does nothing — I type it in the home search bar and it just returns "no items found". I understand this trigger may not work on 2.5.x firmware. 3. I tried placing an empty file named mrpi inside /mrpackages/ and reconnecting, but nothing happens. I'm on Linux (OpenSuse), wifi has been off the entire time since installing the keystore. Is ;log mrpi simply not supported on firmware 2.5.x? Is there a different way to trigger MRPI on this firmware? And is there any workaround for the KUAL cert issue on the DX specifically? Thanks in advance. |

As for MRPI I'm not even sure if it supports DX and works on it but I'm 85% certain that using MRPI on those devices using firmware v2, v3 and v4 ( = anything older than Kindle Touch) isn't even needed. As far as I recall days of me owning a Kindle 3 on those devices you simply install any custom bin installer file by copying it to the "root" ( = top level) of kindle drive (so NOT into "mrpackages" sub-directory) > eject from computer > use "Update Your Kindle" option somewhere in Kindle UI. = you run custom bin files the same way you would manually do an official firmware update. MRPI was introduced somewhere around Kindle PW2 & firmware 5.7.x? when Amazon made it difficult to use "Update Your Kindle" for custom bin installers. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cbEYt0Bcn20 If you want to use KOReader anyway, it's much easier to just use launchpad to start it instead of KUAL. |
