If Amazon can change the DRM upon delivering ebooks to a 2017 device without updating the firmware, there's every reason to think they can potentially do the same for other old devices. |

Hopefully my K5 on 4.1.4 though is so old that it is safe. Though I wouldn't bet against Amazon just deciding one day that they will no longer deliver to those azw3 (non-kfx) devices. |

Why do I get the feeling that the ultimate aim is to force a pay-for-view model on all content, purchased as well as borrowed?

My PW7 running v.5.16.2.1.1 now downloads KFX-ZIP files for 2 new ebooks. After purchasing the books and identifying that they indeed download KFX-ZIP I returned them immediately. Previously this same PW7 downloaded purchased books that allowed DRM to be removed.
For me, this is the last straw for AWS. If I cannot find a source where I can purchase a book and allow for reading on my platform of choice, I will no longer be purchasing ebooks. Right now the only platform I've found is Kobo. |

I cannot say when this started happening or if some non-recent purchases are as well. I only resort to using this when Kindle for PC is 'not compatible' or downloads AZW3 instead of KFX (I have not set up Sats' latest yet). I've been seeing some really weird 'not compatible' with K4PC (apart from recently published books), but rarely: in one case it was a very old purchase and even public domain material. It's not clear to me Amazon is instituting this or the publishers are going through their titles and blacklisting old Kindles (or older versions of Kindle for PC). I don't see a consistent pattern. If you can download them, you should be able to decode them - at least that is my experience to date. Make sure you allow a little extra time before you plug into USB so they are fully downloaded, and of course verify the serial number is still configured for the plugin. Google Play Books might be another alternative, but in my limited experience Kobo downloads have cleaner HTML/CSS (though they don't pass epubcheck without a couple of edits). Given that Amazon has now changed the things for firmware 5.16.2 on up, any Kindle that's able to run that firmware or later is screwed for be able to be used for DRM removal. |

That's the PW4. There is no PW10.

Yes, direct download is cleaner but still don't pass epubcheck. But I've only purchased maybe a dozen books from Kobo. |

As for the device name, what we know the !0 gen Paperwhite as is the PW4. If you go with PW10, that can easily be confusing. Not many will know which Kindle that is. Last edited by JSWolf; Yesterday at 06:17 PM. |

That's not my experience. I've always gotten pure epubs with DRM-free ebooks, without any kepub code. I tried again just now with 3 DRM-free books in my library - downloaded them, imported to calibre and ran the Modify Epub plugin with the option of removing kepub artifacts checked. In all three cases the plugin informed me that nothing was changed, because the books had no kepub code.
