I've not connected my PW3 to the net in a while. I'm not sure what firmware it is running. I just hope it's an old enough firmware.

Yes. Can confirm, am no longer able to use Oasis 2 running v.5.16.2.1.1 to access KFX files. I get KFX-ZIP now.

If Amazon can change the DRM upon delivering ebooks to a 2017 device without updating the firmware, there's every reason to think they can potentially do the same for other old devices.

I don't think Amazon can change the DRM for Kindles that do not receive KFX. The PW2 is the oldest Kindle that supports KFX. I don't know if Amazon can update the DRM for firmware earlier then 5.16.2.1.1. If that is the case, that would leave the PW2 as the only Kindle able to download KFX that can have the DRM rmeoved.

Yeah...I'm definitely worried that my Oasis 3 on 5.18.2 and PW5/11th gen on 5.18.3 are next.

Hopefully my K5 on 4.1.4 though is so old that it is safe. Though I wouldn't bet against Amazon just deciding one day that they will no longer deliver to those azw3 (non-kfx) devices.

Oh well, screw it. I'm throwing in the towel and buying a new kindle. It's a bitter pill for me to swallow because the Kobo UI is far superior.

Buying a used Kindle is a gamble because I may not be able to register it with Amazon.
IF the reason you're remaining with Kindle is because you have books that you paid for but cannot convert THEN Amazon is essentially holding your books for ransom: You paid the author. You paid the publisher. You paid the distributor -- Amazon -- BUT that distributor refuses to give you access to the content. That might not be illegal but it is unjust and amoral.

AND there IS a solution: EVERY book you own but cannot convert HAS ALREADY been converted by someone else and placed, for your convenience, on the internet. There are multiple of these sites which you can find with a google search (one of them even has a Reddit forum.) Literally (almost) every book which has ever been published in history is available there SO they will have yours.

The problem with those sites is that when you dl a book from there which you have not paid for elsewhere, no one is getting paid. That's not good but that's not you: ALL you are doing is exchanging one format for another.

A lesser-human might add the comment "F that MAGA-weasel Bezos" but I'll restrain myself.

I'm not sure where you live or what site you are using, but I only pay Amazon; what they do with the money after that, I don't know (I assume they pay the publisher or independent author).

Edit: Thinking about it, I don't know if they pay the publisher or a distributor.

This almost sounds like an endorsement for piracy.

Suggesting that you go and find eBooks on dodgy sites if you cannot remove the DRM is not a good idea. If you are unable to remove the DRM from Kindle eBooks, stop buying from Amazon and if you have to stop reading eBooks that are only available on Amazon, so be it.

Why do I get the feeling that the ultimate aim is to force a pay-for-view model on all content, purchased as well as borrowed?
