I suspect they consider that a hack of a method rather than a hack of a device.

Now what's wrong with spelling out some of the baggage and implications of using certain words? We are, and we should be doing it all the time. It's also part of the joy of reading. Noone criticizes the usage of the word sideloading for being artificial. That is only a data point. The word just happens to pop up when people are starting to say that it's weird to install an Android app through "adb install" rather than the app store. |

As far as Apple, doesn't the name "sideloading" make sense? I started using iStuff relatively late, bur as I recall, you couldn't just copy things to iDevices, you neeedd to go through iTunes.

Once the iPhone or iPad is no longer supported by the store, you can't install any app. There are apps that will work with directly copied content. And if someone factory resets an older Apple phone/tablet, then the "open" apps are gone. You can just about play music, but only copying your own mp3s via iTunes (not on Linux and minimum Windows 7) and the stock music app. So on an iPhone6, no video or ebooks. OTOH older Android 3 or Android 4.x gear, that can't now connect to app store can have apps installed direct and read epub, listen to mp3 or watch video. Oldest Android still able to install some apps from Store is now 5.x Apple & MS deliberately make working gear be fit for landfill, yet it's Android that's mocked. There are rubbish product running Android. |

When did you last use anything Apple? I haven't opened iTunes for years. I just use the Finder to put files on my iDevices, or toss them with Airdrop, or put them in Dropbox.

I came from non-Apple environments. I don't use Macs. When I started with Apple, I don't think you could "just copy", or use airdrop, or use dropbox: so "sideloading" seemed like a sensible term at the time, and I don't see a problem still using it. YMMV. |

The statement I was responding to was "you couldn't just copy things to iDevices". That's what I was rebutting. |

So you can't just copy to iThings, unless you either can add an app (ONLY via Store) or use approved Apple software. It's a walled garden. |
